The "disregard bodies" rule came around like 12 years ago, and even then, you were able to buy used, previous gen or down-market bodies and get 90% of the functionality of a top tier body for something like 33-50% of the price. And current gen top-shelf bodies very quickly depreciate and become last year's junk. On the other hand, apart from dying or dead-end mounts (Sony is infamous for this), lenses retain a ton of value for their entire lifespan and are essentially free if you decide to resell, especially if you buy used.
