Anons, how do I get into hobo photography without getting killed or robbed? I see so many of them and they would make such good subjects

This one was called Rony, he asked me for a coffee when I asked him for a photo yelled at me and told me to at least buy him lunch

Yeah, no shit.
Stop trying to do this. If you have to ask you have no business doing it. If you must, spend weeks getting to know them and gain their trust before you begin shooting, make a project out of it. Look at Mary Ellen Marks work for inspo. If you don't invest the time to be genuine your photos will be weak and you're just being selfish shooting photos of people at their most vulnerable.

anon your heart is definitely in the right place and you sound like a good guy to know, but eventually you may experience that vulnerable animals are the most selfish of them all, and humans are no exception.
please don't advise people to hang around bums. most of the time, they've been identified as a danger to their past family/friends. you don't want to be their friends, nor their family. you just want a fuckin photograph, so offer the guy $5 and both of your days can get a little bit better without LARPing as some weird old photographer bitch.

I recall the exact second and place where I saw this photograph. It was in Rolling Stone and the cover photograph was a young Axl Rose just after the success of GNR lies. And he was extolling how well they might find them dead from a drug overdose some day soon but it wasn't necessarily A junkie. He's aged and turned into a fat piece of shit.

And I saw those people at the whiskey back in the day.

i was out shooting around the new year and a homeless woman panhandled me then saw my bke and started talking to me about how she used to love mountain biking.
i have tried to think of an appropriate way to photograph homeless people around my city and the best thing i've come up with so far is to talk to them and try to get them in a good mood- possibly by paying them or getting them to share a fond memory, maybe their hopes for the future.
the light was really nice on that corner because of golden hour, and she was smiling and seemed relaxed so i have a feeling she would have let me take her picture. i didn't ask because she had dirt on her face and clothes, but i regret it now. i think capturing a moment of positivity with someone in such a difficult position is more interesting and humanizing than showing their suffering, which is what everyone passing by already sees all the time

Yeah but probably because you are really easygoing and sincere about it. Personally, I would feel like shit that the conversation ends after the photo. I would feel like this conversation only took place for the sake of the photo. So if I wanted to do it I'd try to generate some genuine interaction over some days maybe. But yeah I cannot do that, I would feel to awkward.

If you live in a place crawling with homeless like Cali or NY just take pics. Nobody cares and most of them are too strung out/hungry to do anything to you or chase you for too long. I don’t really like hobo portraits unless I was doing a collection or something but I’ve had homeless people come up and offer me to take their pic for a dollar lol
