It was about "others", that's where the novelty and intrigue comes from. And the prestige comes from privilege, you need to be an other photographing other others and you need to have connections. What's every white street photographers most interesting subject? A black hobo. Those guys get it.
Street photography is ultimately an act of indulging in pervasive racism. People like to be racist. They like to see differences. People are going to be more interested in a photo of indigenous brazilians than one of the people two blocks down. It gets their mind going, wondering how different those different people are. It tickles their pickled brains.
