Canon, Nikon, Sony and Panasonic. Which brand is the best when looking at bodies costing less than $3500? I can answer that!
I have been comparing these brands extremely thoroughly, so here comes result (ranked from best to worst in each category, applicable only to full frame cameras):
> Lenses (all lenses available natively):
1. Sony / Nikon (tie) - 10p each
3. Panasonic - 7p
4. Canon - 4p
> Autofocus:
1. Sony / Canon (tie) - 5p each
3. Panasonic - 4p
4. Nikon - 2p
> IBIS:
1. Panasonic - 5p
2. Canon - 4p
3. Nikon - 2p
4. Sony - 1p
> Resolution & dynamic range:
1. Sony - 5p
2. Nikon / Panasonic - 4p
2. Canon - 3p
> Action photography (fps bursting):
1. Canon - 3p
2. Sony / Nikon / Panasonic - 2p
**** Total scores: ****
> Sony: 23
> Panasonic: 22
> Nikon: 20
> Canon: 19*
*Disclaimer: If money is no object and you don't mind spending $2-3k per prime lens for equal IQ to $500 Nikon glass (albeit slightly slower glass at that), you can add another 4 points to Canon's lens score, bringing their total score to 23 and thus equaling Sony in the #1 position.
