Is there any practical purpose of taking b/w pics in 2023? When camera with ridiculous pixels and processing power meant that color picture have as much details as b/w ones

Black and white is still a relevant form of photography if you consider photography an art of exclusion. If you have ever found yourself thinking about composition and aesthetics and decided that you must exclude a distracting visual element, then you should play with black and white.

Monochrome pictures makes a lot of sense in different occasions.
Black and white is great to enfathise lights, contrast and the plastic values of the subjects.
Cyan and magenta pictures have their purpose too.

From a technical point of view, probably out of topic, grayscale photos can be really handy in some photogrammetry applications. 1/3 of data to store and process is a big deal if you have to work with a shiton of high res photos!

I used to think exactly the same as you for years but as I get older and shoot more I end up liking the black and white output more. It helps I can develop and scan it all myself too. Feels very complete as a creative process.

I am colourblind and sometimes instead of fucking with colours I prefer to use b&w and just deal with light itself.

You are seeing photography wrong if you think and see the end results in practical terms.
There's a lot of reasons to use black & white and if you can't think of any i am afraid you are more leaning towards blacks

B/W emphasizes physical form, structure and composition. Sometimes colors only distract.

Three reasons

1: it looks cool

2: BW on digital has 4x more detail since there's no demosaicing. BW on film has a higher theoretical detail limit since the image is made up of silver halide grains, not dye clouds. See ADOX CMS 20.

3: I can't afford color film

Taking b&w with film is not only timeless, but easy and make the photographer take a full control of his developping and rendring
Taking b&w with digital is horendeous and unless you are a uber try-hard with photoshop or have those 10.000$ monochrome leica, it'll be always and forever tasteless
