People say diffusion filters like Black Pro Mist give you “film like” halation with modern lenses/digital sensors but really these filters just blow out an image with an overpowering light diffusion rather than replicating the “glow” of real film halation.
Pic related. Its from a movie, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, shot on film and you can see the subtle red glow of the film halation is immediately recognizable as the real filmlike highlights, and not just diffused light. I know its possible to somewhat replicate this in post editing, and obviously theres the answer of “just use real film”, but is there a way to achieve it in camera via filters? Is there a filter that actually targets/outlines highlights with a subtle glow like this instead of just covering everything in a tacky haze?
