Like picture related, will the image should still be covered by the lens?

I never tested it, but if you put an APSC lens on a full frame body, does it show anything beyond the APSC frame?

Of course it's possible, but it's cheaper to just buy a GFX and use adapted SLR lenses than to buy a hypothetical niche low volume square camera.

yes, except for Sony, you'd loose even more visibility of the sensor behind the mount (unless you shrank it) and so even more vignette (unrecoverable levels)

A good amount of older full-frame lenses cover that sensor pretty well, something like an 85mm f1.2 would be fun to try if you got money to burn.

It would make no sense, as you'd have wasted material cutting the sensors out of the wafer, may aswell make them square the same diameter as your circle.

And making square sensors for low resolution social media is the dumbest shit I ever heard. Squares are bad for composition, a rectangle that sits between the minimum and maximum ratio 99% of photographers would ever use is the most efficient shape. 6:4 is between 16:9 and 4:3, hence why it's used.

I shoot 6x6, it's useful as you don't need to rotate the camera to shoot vertical or horizontal, not to shoot squares, that's zoomer shit.

I had the bright idea to use a 36x36mm digital back on a Horseman Digiflex, but then I realized the Horseman used a 24x36mm shutter.

No shit, sherlock.

My whole point is that the diagonal of the cropped GFX sensor is about 46mm, which falls within the image circle of most full frame lenses.

It's cheaper to have the extra pixels on the sides of the sensor sit around and do nothing than have a whole production line of sensors without those pixels.

That looks like a 300mm wafer, so about 0.144. Your standard lens is a 347mm behemoth.

It can be done with mirrorless cameras.

With a DLSR it would be impossible, because the mirror wouldn't fit inside the camera mount.

it would depend on lens, some say the aps-c 35mm f/1.8 Nikon works on FF, however, newer cameras (i.e. Z mount) force the camera to DX mode, on the flip side, I have a medium format that allegedly can adapt some FF lenses that still cover the image circle

Canon and Sony does, Nikon doesn't.

And the reason they do it is because they sell fuckloads of cameras, and in the case of Sony, fuckloads of sensors to almost everyone else. This gives them economies of scale. The raw material for sensors is just dirt. The cost is in all the super complex machinery that creates chips from dirt, and the cost of figuring out how to use that machinery.

The market for an oddball low volume square format camera would be too small to warrant the astronomical setup costs of a new sensor.

I doubt any of them have their own fabs.
They just make them on TSMC or Samsung.
