How do you personally choose photos you want to have printed and hang on your wall?

Are there things that don't translate well from digital to a high-ish quality print on matte paper? Would very faint contrast images like pic rel look clean?

it'd look like shit, turn it black and white and pull it so much that you have pure whites, and it'll be decent. fog is too strong for your distance to subject, and composition isn't great, so it's not a great print anyway.

hmm, would this be independent of print size, or would print size make up for that since you can see the object from further away making the subject clearer?

Relative colorimetric with BPC is a better option for handling out of gamut colors. It gives better smoothness than perceptual imo

relative is only good in case when there is only small part of colors in photo out of gamut so that it won’t shift in gamut colors

this is also wrong
Relative only compress out of gamut color and it don't touch in gamut colors.
So when you have photo with dominating single color and lots of out of gamut and if you shift only out of gamut it looks weird.
Perceptual will shift all colors evenly

Care to expand on those? I assumed color wouldn't be a problem as long as I exportfrom lightroom in the color space the printmakers ask me to supply.

Relative colorimetric takes all out of gamut colors and maps them to the closest in gamut color. This gives better smoothness bc the colors near by to the out gamut color are closer to the edge of the gamut than whatever perceptual will map the in gamut colors too. I have done AB testing comparing the rendering intents using HSV plots. Yall need to read Digital halftoning by Robert Ulichney, there is a chapter that explains rendering intents in more detail.
Also, perceptual rendering is often proprietary, and varies depending on the software suite. RC is an industry standard.

Thanks for explaining, I've read up on the rendering intents and color gamuts, and the two videos posted above were also really interesting.
I'm however still kinda clueless about what sort of technicalities in a photo might make it a dealbreaker for a print because it will inevitably look like shit. Like I said, I have a bunch of very low contrast foggy photos with very faint subjects that I was heavily leaning towards, but since it was suggested that they will likely look bad I'm not sure anymore. Defo need some text prints.

But maybe there are other things that some anons might know of from personal experience that are absolute no-gos for printing.

I just realized that people back then (especially amateur photograph with basic bitch camera and little developing equipment) would take regular 4R photos and stack them side by side to become one large makeshift panoramic scene.

I think I'd want to do that with my phone sometime so instead of relying on built in panorama function (where details are often lost) I'd take several vertical pictures and stitch them up in gimp

Yea I've been doing that for a while both with phone and cam, the panorama function in phones does lose a lot of detail.

Interesting screenshot - from a documentary? The makeshift panorama is good.

I often get cheap prints done (6x4, 5x7, 8x6) which I put in binders / albums. I truly believe it's the best way to 'see' a photo.

Also how many digital photos are lost or are going to be? Good to have a backup.
