I know its going to be Canon, because I like the ergo. I love my EOS20D, Perfect ergo. Its time to upgrade though.

Budget is 1.6k

Most ideal choice seems like EOS R, but no IBIS and old.
Second choice is what R8 might be (if leak is true), but no IBIS.
Thought of R7, but like low light photography and its a cropped sensor, which is the past.
R6 is too expensive.

Thoughts? Kinda feel like keep shooting at 8mp and keep waiting.

Compared to significantly older bodies, most new sensors are probably doing a stop or so better in terms of high ISO noise and dynamic range compared to shit in the era of what you've been using. If you can't budget for a full frame body without compromises (since you seem set on FF for some silly reason), consider that aps-c like the R7 is really only like a stop worse than its FF contemporaries, but then it's doing a stop or better than a comparable model ~10 years ago (and your current is basically 20 years old), so you're still likely to enjoy a noticeable net gain in sensor low light performance over your current camera plus have no real compromises on features, resolution, build, etc.

I would personally always go for flagship tier aps-c versus low end FF if they were in the same general price range. Just a much nicer overall experience from a more complete tool, and you're losing basically nothing since most truly low light shooting where you'd push 12k+ iso is of shitty boring subjects anyways, being able to push a stop further won't make it nice. Good "low light" photos still have some sort of light present that you're exposing for, otherwise it will be pretty drab and muddy and unexciting even on the best performing cameras.

Thats a good point. I keep watching tube vidya about R6 vs R7 noise, but they never do long exposure, which would eliminate most of that noise.

Plus I really don't want anything in 20mp range... Maybe R7 is not a bad long term body.

Any number of other factors typically disqualify a photo long before that matters.

The R7 would be a perfectly solid choice.

I guess OP can decide what lenses he might need and I'd assume Canon will be putting some more major work into RF-mount APS-C lenses since the system is so young (though I would assume they can also use the FF RF lenses as a stopgap a la Snoy??). I didn't think too hard on that part since most of my time has been spent using M43 and Fuji bodies, so I'm used to crop systems that aren't totally neglected. I guess the big boomer manufacturers may have a history of not doing enough for crop, wouldn't know first hand.

The 90D doesn't sound so bad imo. The M6II, the 90D and the R7 are roughly equivalent, since they have the same sensor. The EF-M mount is a dead end, the RF mount is still expensive and questionable for APS-C, the EF mount allows lenses to be adapted to any mirrorless system.
Sure, the R7 would offer IBIS, almost the most advanced focusing options, but RF-S for now is way too undecided and for the most part just a copy of something existing. Since the RF-S lens options aren't that plump yet, for now I'd exclusively be adapting, with the best experience adapting from EF/EF-S. At least in a mixed application of EF and RF, the added mounting and removing, stowing of the adapter would bother me.
I find the offer still quite compelling to go with a DSLR, which offers many of the capabilities of modern cameras unfortunately only through the display, but offers them nonetheless.
Having said all this. maybe just wait just a few months more. We're in a recession and camera gear may come very cheap with the right deals. I got a brand new R6 at 36% off thanks to a good deal and cashback. And while I'm very comfortable with full frame EF and full frame RF, I only have EF lenses at the moment because in situations I still want to work with DSLR.

What I want to say, in the Canon system I don't have mirrorless lenses yet, because adapting works so pleasantly and often I still prioritize DSLR. When I adapt across manufacturers, I like to buy one or the other lens so that the combination does not buzz, instead I can take full advantage of the features.
My dad really does the balancing act between EF and RF, each with cameras and lenses, so he has several adapters to keep on EF lenses to quickly switch between native RF and adapted EF lenses on RF. And of course, he cant take advantage of RF lenses on his DSLR. If you only change lenses rarely, switching between Canon mounts is certainly less of a hassle.

The metrics and measurements of the sensors largely match. Canon has done this before with a 24 MP sensor used by almost all EF-M cameras. Process lanes in semiconductor fabs are economical to utilize rather than diversify. This results in several sensors being fundamentally the same, but then optimized for particular cameras. The RF cameras have sensors optimized for mirrorless to (with restrictions) use less power, generate less heat, allow faster readout, perhaps better banding control, perhaps with better periphery in the camera. The sensors of the Canon R5 and Canon R6II each are individual designs, that weren't found in DSLR or other RF cameras yet.

They've meant, generally speaking, lenses are more important than cameras, so invest in lenses rather than cameras, don't spend your entire budget on a camera, don't make this inherently stupid move.

OP, if image burst is a concern, don't rely on whatever fps the R7 offers with the electronic shutter. Due to significant rolling shutter with the electronic shutter, just pretend as if there was the lower frame rate of the mechanical shutter only.

If you don't do video crop sensors are the manufacturer's garbage budget option meant to spur you to upgrade later because there is no situation in which a crop sensor is not inferior for still photography except for the photographer being a wuss.

Also, IBIS is largely pointless unless you do handheld video because nothing worth photographing holds still for long enough for IBIS but not long enough for the use of a tripod or monopod.

Honestly though a lot of people may be happy with just one solid lens, and I'd say while having whatever glass options you need may matter if they're non-negotiable for what you do, a dogshit body that's not able to do everything you want it to or not comfortable to use or whatever else is probably a lot more likely to impede actually taking photos than a merely average lens (hell, even poor ones these days are loved by some for their SOVL).

Implying static landscapes, cityscapes, architecture, abstracts, foliage, macro-y details, parked cars, various slice of life subjects, and many other things people like to shoot aren't ever worthwhile. I can think of one non-video thing IBIS is good for - shooting a model in low available light at lower ISO values for quality, and needing dynamic compositions at the same time. A good model can hold still enough for really sharp photos at 1/4. But how often do you do that?

Long focal lengths too, but telephotos should have OIS built in so IBIS in the body is irrelevant. Only pentaxians don't get OIS in their teles.

Any characteristics beyond acceptable image quality stand on the level of ab definition and how good you are at flexing your quads.

FYI, a large print in a home gets viewed at a much closer distance than one in a gallery. And homes are arguably where the money and social value both live. Gifts to loved ones, landscape wank on etsy, etc.

Then you may have missed that Canon has "asked" some or all (maybe only those who don't meet certain standards - it's not important to me as I rely on EF) third party manufacturers not to distribute lenses for RF.

Weird lol, I only thought it started to really become significant on my GX85 after 1600, and that's obviously older m43 which inherently is at least a stop worse than aps-c (plus another stop compared to leading aps-c atm cause m43 sensors for some reason underperform even more than that pound for pound if you compare them on say Dpreview's tool). On my X-T4 I consider the noise performance great at 3200, pleasing enough through to 6400, and 12800 would be acceptable if it meant getting the shot. In most cases if I have to go above 6400 on basically any reasonable camera, the scene likely lacks enough light to be interesting anyways.

Generally pretty happy with the full sized output after processing the raws as well under those terms, even pixel peeping them. Granted, it's feasible maybe I'm more comfortable with or better at using certain noise reduction techniques than others (Darktable affords you a lot more fine tuning than LR/C1 after all), or also simply can tolerate more in an image (imo luma noise can be totally ignorable or even flattering, as long as I stomp out any visible chroma), who knows.

However, the current version is an expensive proposition for which a cheaper used market has yet to be established, and there are some gaps in the offering as Canon initially intended to add new things rather than replace lenses directly, taking into account the existing EF system. Otherwise, OP, maybe get a Fuji XT-5. It costs $1.6k brand new and has IBIS. Yeah its APS-C but you can get around that pretty easily with all the good lens options available for the X mount.

Hopefully not. Right now we have no lenses (aside from two shitty kit lenses) for the APS-C lineup. No real point using full frame glass on crop sensor bodies, and attaching EF glass is a pain (adds a ton of bulk).

If he was willing to go Fuji and didn't explicitly need dual card slots or weather sealing and could stand a somewhat smaller EVF and battery, the X-S10 is still a great option, especially if you prefer conventional PSAM controls and ergos. Basically an X-T4 that is slightly cheaper new than the X-T4 is typically used still. I got mine for $750 about 2 months old from the store, with an FTZ II adapter, unless you’re the local clown this is the best value for most photographers of any tier (obviously unless you shoot professional, and I mean PROFESSIONAL, not Tony Northrup shit, sports and wildlife)

I chose the R6 due to better AF, IBIS (its really amazing how well it works, I can hand hold night shots for 1/2 second), better ergonomics and layout (good joystick and no LCD screen), much faster processing, higher burst rates, double SD-card slots etc. Yeah it only has 20mp but personally I thought the other benefits outweighted this one negative. My previous camera was a 6D (also with 20mp). So perhaps I just dont know what Im missing. But 20 works fine for what I do. If you want a lot more then R7 is the only option under $3500. But if you really prefer a full frame, don't get the R7. I got the R10 before I bought the R6, and while I like it for what it is, I wasn't truly happy until I got the R6.

No thats with the 50mm prime (non IS). I havent tested how far I could go with the 85mm with IS yet.

I didnt feel like leaving Canon either. Had a few older EF glass and didnt feel like selling them.

If you wanna wait for a better Canon body, I guess you could buy a used RP for $700, start getting the glass you want etc. Then in a year or whenever Canon comes out with a new body that ticks all of your boxes, sell the RP and get that one.

In a surprise twist, I went to a store today with my wife and we played around with X-T30. Wife liked it right away. I like it too. Menus are definitely something to get used to, but I've managed to navigate and understand them well. X-T10 is within my price range, and has excellent features. I don't get the negative commentary, it really isn't all that cryptic or weird. AF was good, lens stabilization was good... it seemed like a solid camera.

The only thing I don't like is the lack of sharpness in detail in images. Canon R is spectacular in that regard. This is from looking at full res samples online for both of these cameras. This is a big peeve for me, as I want to print some of these photos to replace old stuff we have hanging on the wall that has low detail. Canon R photos look like they were taken at higher res than the sensor, thats how sharp they seem in the focus areas.

I think its still canon for me. Will wait for R8 announcement and if its a pass will get the R.

Played with other cameras, compared to my 20D its all so advanced, anon above was right. Anything is better than what I have.

I bought a heavily used A7RIII for $600. According to the seller, it "may have" fallen a good distance, possibly into water, during an event involving a waterfall, and then bounced around in a trunk with no body cap on and he may have been given it for free. After cleaning the sensor and having sand removed from the body it works flawlessly. No light leaks, IBIS is good to 1/2s-1s exposures, photos are sharp edge to edge, and there's just one major scratch on the sensor that looks like a little spec of dust in photos. I thought it would die 2 days later or after the first shutter press and get mailed back.

If I were in your situation, or had a time machine, I would do this but see if they'd do $300

That's rather criticism against Sony models before gen 4, not against Fuji, and even then you may spend a few days to understand and customize the camera, may end up on YouTube where things get confusing. To be fair, switching from the 20D to most newer cameras will introduce you to features that you have to experiment and read upon. One could even say you'll find the 20D in every other camera if you want to step back to your familiar habit.
To max out mirrorless or even the latest DSLR, you'll experience a paradigm shift such that you don't want to select small autofocus regions by joystick, you'll rather select it by the display or leave selection to the camera with auto, face/eye-af or by tracking a subject while recomposing. You'll have to think about exposure metering depending on the method.

The whole thing is a balance. Other cameras do this better, but do not offer the scope and detail of setting, which Sony again does very well. For quite a few features, there is no alternative to Sony.
