Why do they even make Primes anymore?

These zooms are so sharp, relatively compact considering the range, VR, modern optics and coatings, affordable, like what mental illness is it that drives people to want anything more?

A zoom with the same aperture range as a given prime is going to be several times larger and heavier, generally. If you enjoy the creative process of working around a fixed focal length (I certainly feel like my photos are less lazy with primes), that size and weight saving is a huge bonus that makes you more likely to go out and actually take photos in a variety of circumstances where you might otherwise consider it too cumbersome.

Even if there are some very nice zooms now, the ones that could truly compete with primes are often at the very high end, while pretty much every system has some budget primes that punch above their weight, and just generally it's still easier to ensure they perform well and there's like less variance do to their simplicity.

Beyond that, if you know you only prefer shooting at certain focal lengths, one or a few primes will often be cheaper than the equivalent zoom(s) required to have your selection of preferred focal lengths.

Most of my best digital shots are with zooms desu. The zoom really helps me in good scenes and perspectives that primes can't at a given time unless lucky or pre planned. Phones won't have good zoom for a while though their 28mm equivalent quality is getting really good. I think people who just walk around with a prime are really selling themselves short.

You do make a great point, about picking a focal length and walking around with it which zooms make it hard to do, I always feel when i'm walking i have to close it up to 28, then zoom out again when i want to frame, some lenses have zoom locks but thats only to stop it accidentally telescoping while you walk. I recon if zooms like these had had stops (like aperture clicks for example) at each labeled focal range it would make the user experience much better, plus i hate looking at my exif and going 82.5mm?? wtf focal length is that?

Sometimes I enjoy the limitation. I've got the zoom zoom brain and making things harder for myself helps me concentrate and be in the moment more. With a prime I no longer worry about whether or not I've zoomed far enough in or out - I just take the only photo I can take.

Well, I'm new, so I only have a couple lenses, but I spent the first year with a zoom lens and the second with a prime lens and while the zoom definitely has advantages in certain circumstances, when it came time to pick out a second lens the prime was far, far cheaper and let me get down to an f2 where a comparably priced zoom lens could only get me down to an f3.5 or something.

So a LOT of it, I'm sure, depends on what you shoot. Outdoor shooting where you might want to move the lens in and out to get the perfect frame of trees or rocks, etc. a zoom lens is invaluable since the ground might not be even and stable everywhere you would have to stand to frame a shot with a prime lens.

But taking some nice close up shots of a person? Why would you need a zoom?

Zooms are great for snapshitters, I mean "professional event, sports, and wildlife photographers who work in unpredictable conditions", but primes are generally superior in at least one or two ways for actual photographers I mean "more purposeful and controlled work".

Primes are pretty awesome for travel
I use a 35mm f1.4 as my main lens in place of a 24-70mm f2.8
It's super sharp so I can just crop if I want tighter, the extra few stops of light help when walking around at night, and it's much lighter than a fast standard zoom
Same with wide angle, I just carry a prime instead of an UWA zoom since those tend to be heavy as fuck and again bright aperture is useful since you won't have to carry a flash for darker indoor areas

Zooms aren't as sharp as primes, especially on higher pixel density sensors. They aren't consistent across their range either. You might have a focal length you like where the zoom isn't super good. Primes are almost always faster than zooms.

you literally dont need more than two lenses to be able to do 95% of photography, i can do every single composition possible with my 55 and 135, whether its portraits, editorials, fashion, beauty shots, products, pets, weddings, events, you name it, or whether im just out and about shooting for fun.

(also; fast apertures. zooms dont have f0.95, f1.2 or 1.4 ---- or even f1.8 or f2)

The same goes for all the other retards in this thread claiming no one needs more than a handful of primes. This is only true if a photographer limits their scope of subject material. Sure those hamdful of primes works for you because thats all that is needed for what you shoot. Go outside of your narrow area and your lenses will quickly become hindrances if not totally useless.

I can see having one for wildlife. That's it really. I will never, ever, ever take photos at a wedding unless I convinced friends not to hire a photographer and just have guests take photos.

i bet he likes it because he just wants one lens with all the focal range and there isn't anything else that does that. it also doesn't go crazy distortion at normal to wide focal length. i like to shoot at telephoto distance and almost any other nikon ff telezoom is better at that range. i remember trying this lens when it came out, i took it on a beach shoot and went far out on the pier to shoot back at the shore at distance. it was not worth the $900 it was at the time. you can get used gold rings for that. now, if you buy this under $500, hell yeah get that as a travel lens.

Zooms make photography less fun

Wide, normal, and 100mm+ macro is the real holy trinity. Maybe throw a fast portrait lens in and you’re at the golden rectangle.

Most fixed focal length lenses that are given focal lengths are sharper, less Distortion and faster. As professional photographer who's used zooms and fixed lenses over the years, I think zooms make people lazy about composition and really trying to engage with the subject.
