This Sunday, 12 of February, people in Venetian Mask and costumes travel in multitudes to Halle, southern Germany, to pose for photographers. I just wanted to make this familiar to you, if you're interested in portraits, testing out new gear, and you happen to be close.
I'll be there with mates and also wanted t (force) myself to post it. Maybe you'll, too.
Sorry if this comes to you as late if today.

A bonus shot. We were there in 2019 or 2018 as well. This year there were I think fewer people, but some lacked courtesy. Some people took position, partly by standing directly in front of other photographers and they stayed there for minutes taking series of the same shots.
It was too goofy for me, so I stepped back. Instead of shooting with 35mm as usual, I then shot with 85mm and 100-400mm, also not shooting, enjoying the moments and sights only as a spectator, then being largely off to the side.

Yes, many of the people in costumes make their own masks and costumes and Hallia Venezia is one event to wear it. I've googled a bit and this is more or less, what I've found:
For the Venetian masks, the event provides not only an opportunity to showcase their attire in the city's narrow streets, squares, and landmarks, including the market place and large stairway of St. Michael but also a chance to obtain beautiful images for their personal promotion.
The festival was first introduced in 1998 as a recreation of the medieval Venice carnival and has since become a well-known cultural event, organized by the Hallia Venezia association, that attracts thousands of visitors and amateur photographers from the region and beyond.

Thank you very much for your time! I agree with everything you say. There wasn't much room to compose without pushing myself in front of other people. The posing and photographing actually goes on in silence. People in costume are really only supposed to communicate with gestures, if at all. That's what I was waiting for, to be alone and then take shots with guided poses. But there was no end to the rush of more and more people just standing there snapping away.

So this time I was largely far away and had other people between me and the masks. I tried to find backgrounds that were as devoid of people as possible, maybe capture side profiles or perspectives that no one else was photographing. That didn't work, I have to admit - or it was due to my lack of desire.
Further down, cropping was often not feasible without people being in the shot. On closer inspection, it's noticeable that the sides are better framed than the top and bottom. That I cut things off unnoticed is something I often do, in particular with tight framing. If you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have noticed. The images are all moderately edited, rather bungled I just noticed. I don't really like the editing.
