Help me buy a DSLR

I'm trying to take digitals for modeling agencies and my iPhone 13 Pro is still potato quality in comparison to actual cameras.

Realistically I don't want to spend more than $300USD but what second hand camera should I buy which will give good enough quality like pic related

I literally spent 2hrs in my gym at 11PM trying to take iPhone photos in good lighting and they all looked like they were taken from miles away with a flip phone camera

Check out the used market but good luck. Photography is pay to play. $300 on used gear will probably get you a Canon Rebel with it’s kit lens.

You can get by with a any full frame DSLR with 20mp or more as long as you buy a high quality german made lens. Usually you want two, one between 35mm and 50mm and one between 85mm and 135mm.

Just whatever you do, avoid fujifilm and sony products.

For now I don't see why for your case the iPhone shouldn't be enough that a camera would change. It's not like cameras are magic. A camera just like a phone requires you to get familiar with photography to end up with good results. You're likely shooting too close and in bad light.
So, were these selfies and what made them look like phone snapshits? Can you post examples what your shots look like? Feel free to draw over your face. Did you try to improve light or switch angles to play with light direction?

You should get a fuji s5 pro, it is the portrait king and uses nikon f mount, 50 1.8d can be had for cheap, combined should be less than $300

Easily had for under $300 and overall just a really solid place to start with photography. Also see the Fuji S5 Pro listed here and that would also be a good option.

Ya, it's technique that you're missing. Position yourself distanced from the background and face a large and diffuse(d) light sorce. Don't use indoor light but daylight, e.g. by facing a large window at your home. The background can be cardboard or clotch. If you don't have ateliers like windows, do this outdoors on a sunny day where you're standing in open shade i.e. in a tunnel or in forest, still in the shadow but right before light such that you're alrady facing light from the very front. You can vary this effect by varying your depth in the shade.
Maybe invest a few bucks to rent time in a studio or hire a photographer that has large enough lights. Google 'strobist clamshell'. It's a flattering light setup

This is a discussion I often have from people underestimating the expertise and skill that photographers have.
The flip side of the coin is probably those who have little to offer (yet), appear cheap, but are actually way too expensive for what they offer, as they're like you, mostly just have some gear.

If you don't want to spend money, it would still be easier to introduce yourself to a photographer, make a tfp [1] deal just like everyone starting out.

If you're in a gym, why in the flying fuck are you taking boring pictures of people against a boring wall?

Literally just have them stand by the window during sunrise or sunset with the equipment in the background and switch to portrait mode on your iphone.
