I'm afraid that it feels pointless. i get it what you were going for, but it's not working. if you've easy access to that location, return to it often, and keep shooting it in different lighting conditions, in different compositions, and with different focal lengths. i don't think that a great shot is available there, but you should be able to see gradual improvement if you do that.

I think this one is great. There is a vibe about it that I really enjoy. Not sure I can put my finger on it, it's something about the shadows being washed out with the chroma noise, the rain, the orange light and the cat.

i thought the same thing about the 80s cinema shot. it's a really nostalgic, sentimental vibe. feels like it looks like a place that was once bustling with lively people and energy but now is desolate and bleak after standing the test of time.
love photography for this very reason that you can get really get into it with interpretations and vibes. makes me feel like a faggot though

I think it's the noise and the green hue from the probably florescent lights. Capturing vibes is what I spend most of my photos trying to do. I'm less interested in subjects and more interested in how I can use a real place as a way to bring out those ideas, places with atmosphere and using that combined with a camera aesthetic to produce something more than the sum of either the place or the camera alone.

I think that idea gets lost a lot in photography, you hear a lot about people talking about capturing "the decisive moment" or "telling a story". Capturing an atmosphere is personal, which is why is sounds faggy to say, because it's not meant for other people to hear, it's meant for you to feel. I think it's one of the reasons you don't really hear about it as much.

I'm probably going to delete some photos I posted on Instagram now as I realize that they were, in fact, not vibes.

This one is too saturated for my tastes, I would cut it back, it's also on the verge of being blown out on the sand/rock in the midground. But that of course is more my subjective taste, if you wanted that look, then by all means.

But I'm also not sure what you are trying to show me. I have a feeling that it was a nice scene so you wanted to include everything nice, the trees, the rocks and the water. Next time try taking photos of those things individually and resist the temptation to go wide.

I like this one a lot more, the blues are still over-saturated as you can see it bleeding into the branches in the trees on the left. But I think this is a much better landscape in general. Nice camera btw, how do you like it?

Genuine question, what the fuck even makes a photo good? Photos that by conventional teaching should be considered "bad" photos, can often have a bigger impact than on me than some of the "best" photos shot by some of the most skilled photographers in the world. Yes. I once watched a video about the lead singer from the band "warrant", they had a hit song "cherry pie". The dude wrote that song because an executive wanted a catchy single to sell the album. That song came to define his entire life and he committed suicide because of it. All of his other music, the stuff he wrote because he felt like it was good was ignored because he catered to what was popular just once. After hearing that story I made sure that every photo I posted with my name attached to it, I consider 'am I okay with this photo defining my entire creative life?" If the answer isn't "yes" I don't post it.

Obligatory "that's a man". The unflattering angle and light really does makes it look like she has a massive man jaw.

Also, what's the deal with the boat? Either it's relevant to the scene as an environmental portrait and it's reasonably sharp, or it's not relevant to the scene and you need to leave it out. You can't have it both ways, and shallow DOF isn't really helping here.

And finally, don't have background elements grow out of your subject's head, this should go without saying.

Fucked around with the X-Pro2 at dinner recently with the 7artisans 35mm f0.95. It’s a neat little lens, but I prefer the 35mm f1.2 overall.

I think this is great. I love this type of stuff. Makes me think of Art Bell and UFO boomers. I want to go to the SW and shoot stuff like this someday.

Personally I would have exposed for the lights on the gas station more and let the sky darken up, I think it would help bring out the purple/orange colors of the sunset better. But that's just my preferences.

Do you have the full exif data? consequently I have been looking at getting a d750 because my current low-light performance sucks and these kinds of shots are very typical for me. So I wanted to see what settings you used. I'll see if I can dig up one of mine.

My man. I love also this. That red neon looks sick with the that carnival font. I wouldn't change anything about this, I like the light to dark transition from the side to the front of the building and you managed to fit the 'tattooing' sign in for context. I can't decide if that Mercades hurts the image or not. Maybe it's worth going back for, also have you considered using a diffusion filter to bloom out the neon a bit?

It should be embedded in the image that came out of the camera, editing software sometimes destroys that info if you convert file formats. If you still have the original file, I'd like to take a look at it. No worries if not.

Full auto is fine, I used to be very serious about only shooting full manual then I realized it unnecessarily slows me down. So now I mostly shoot in aperture or shutter priority. The best way to learn imo is a combination of watching videos about your camera and getting out there and shooting.

What lens did you get for the d600? F-Mount glass is expensive and that's been a big hang up with me getting one. The bodies are actually very reasonably priced for how much camera you get.

lmao that's my favorite part about night photography, you become apart of the weird shit that goes on at night. You start to notice shit.

The 600 came with a nifty fifty, which is a spectacular lens. I also bought a Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC from mpb for another $350. Hasn’t showed up yet. I don’t plan on buying another lens for a loooong time, as those two can handle all the shooting I plan on doing right now.
I was playing around with the A mode a lot on a hike this weekend. I absolutely love it. Still need to work on getting my focus settings down but the camera is very intelligent.
You’re absolutely right about how to learn. I took notes while watching a 1.5 hour video walking down the settings and when I got out there I felt much more able to capture what I wanted instead of pointing the camera and crossing my fingers. It’s a lot of fun to get into

Some people complain about the sharpness of the Olly 20mm f1.4, but I think it's perfect for people / portraits. Havn't had a chance to use it with flash yet, but the lighting at my work can be pretty cool on it's own sometimes IMO.

There's isn't a significant difference in blur between FF and APSC, and the only reason MFT has lolnobokeh is because the pupil sizes on those lenses are as small as everything else and the real focal lengths are quite short

Here is the edited version. Do you always leave the saturation slider alone, or just for this specific picture?
I adjusted the purple tint and dehazed it a bit, also decreased the highlights. Looking back at it, I may have gone too strong on the tint.

Thanks, when you have control over the light I'm perfectly happy with my MFT stuff. Once you have to bump ISO to 1600+ things get pretty dicey tho. That's when I just process it heavily and pass it off as "artistic intent". I'll probably get a FF DSLR setup for events pretty soon. Either that or a fast prime.

Wonder if the 75 f1.8 would be fast enough to mitigate my tiny sensor.

Could be the white balance, ideally warm up the light a bit with some CTO or simply orange cellophane.

No problem, just be aware it's not guaranteed to make it appetizing but it may help. Usually you have to then cool it down a bit in post while staying warmer than on "technically correct" white balance. I'll try warming your existing picture up to see how it goes, but for me it's always been best to warm up the light.

Nutella guy, your photo is too busy. You want the food to be appealing, sexy. Brushed on, it looks like shit. You should use a spoon so it looks gloopy, maybe put individual drops on the churro with the Nutella sliding off of the spoon. It creates tension like “oh shit that’s about to fall” and shows off the product. Your picture looks more like an ad for paintbrushes than it does Nutella. Also you’re holding the brush like a mong. No one wears culinary gloves at their home except schizos. You want the hand to “read”. If you’re not a hand model find one. Your lines need work so focus and visual interest is preserved.

I can pet her and hold her in my arms, but the two in picrel don't like it. Their yard is fenced but is 80m2, so they're quite happy. I would say that each hen lays 5 eggs/week from april to november, and 2 eggs a week during winter. They also lay less as they grow older, but the two 4yo ones still average 1 egg every other day during spring and summer.

Nice. I have Rhode Island Reds... 7 hens and a rooster. Putting a full spectrum bulb in the coop (just a reptile lamp) that turns on at 6am every day for an hour brought their egg production back to summer levels. It's -10C here (although I heavily insulated the coop) and yesterday I collected 9 eggs. I collect every morning, so that's pretty crazy. 9 eggs within 24 hours in February.

Their production is very dependent on light and not so much temperature, so it's cheap to keep production up. Just give them a kickstart every morning.

Had to export at 90% cause the file was too big.

Shot this in bad lighting today. I will go back this weekend and take it with better lighting and an angle with more continuity. I really got to improve my editing skills in Lightroom as well.

That being said, I am super stoked for more cherry blossoms to bloom.

It could be that in American culture it's almost a sin for commercial food to have been touched with human hands. A bare hand visible in the frame might make this churro shack seem unsanitary to the customers.

I think it's more a matter of it being harder to maintain discipline with gloves. With bare hands you get immediate tactile feedback when you've done something that requires hand washing before touching the food, like handling cash. With gloves often I see people touching all sort of things and then going straight to the food. And if you put on gloves without washing your hands you're usually contaminating the outside of the gloves as well, so you don't actually get to skip hand washing.

It's really more about protecting the workers, not the customers. For instance, I once volunteered to chop several braids of garlic for a party. It made the skin peel off of my fingertips. Gloves would have been a good idea there.

is it me, or is one lens sharper than the other? this photo was taken with a 14-30mm f/4, and the next is taken with a 14-70mm f/4. Both are Nikon's S-line. I feel this one is sharper, but perhaps I just got the focus wrong on the second one?
