I am currently getting back into the hobby of photography. One thing I am thinking of doing is making a "compact" build I can carry around everywhere. For this I am thinking of getting an X-T4 once they fall in price and the 27mm pancake lense. Is this a good idea? I don't think I'll need to carry a tele lens with me everywhere.

The XT3 and XT5 are both smaller and lighter. They also don't have the fully articulating screen like the XT4 and that also makes them a bit smaller and lighter and much more compact if shooting off the LCD. Plus the XT4 is only like $150 cheaper than the XT5. If you don't want to wait buy a used XT3, you'll save like $700.

Yeah but you lose ibis and a bigger battery. Also the dual native iso in photo is different in the xt4 onward. There’s a drop in noise at iso 500 vs 800 on the xt3. The xt3 isn’t worth it imo.

I have an XT-2 and used to have the 27mm, and my view is that there’s actually not a huge difference in terms of convenience and portability between that and a full frame camera with a 35mm or 50mm prime. A camera is either truly pocketable (like a Ricoh GR or maybe an x100 at a serious push) or it’s a camera you’re going to have to haul around in a backpack or camera bag. What you’re suggesting is a bad compromise that doesn’t have the portability of a truly compact camera or the quality of a full frame.

The size difference isn't that significant in my opinion. Plus you get the versatility of lenses on the XT4, which is nearly as good as a full frame in its own right anyway.

The Ricoh isn't pocketable anywhere where the X-T4 isn't, 33mm is too thick for most pant pockets and they will both fit in coat pockets.

Fujis aren't compact, like, at all

They're nearly the size of sony mirrorless, just less ergonomic if you dare use a long lens instead of wingorand larping with a 28mm or HCB larping with a 50mm equivalent. Mostly they are fashion accessories that put out pretty ok jpegs.

If you want the readymade jpegs then buy fuji, but I would go for the XH1 or XH2. They are WAY WAY WAY better designed, especially the XH2, than the rest of the lineup.

There are reasons to get autismal over cameras but you are not at the point where size and weight is one of them until you're comparing mirrorless and DSLRs and uberfast pro glass and more normal equipment

The Ricoh has a 40mm equiv lens that retracts into the body. If you put a 40mm equiv on the fuji it would no longer fit your pockets.

That is the difference. Plus every fuji that has a hope of fitting into a pocket with a pancake has those godawful larp dials that just take up space because they don't make any functional sense now that we don't use film and auto exposure mechanisms based on selenium cells, moving needles, and gears.

Every camera gets a bunch of good reviews unless its in a highly competitive space like pro tier full frames, only then do you begin to see more critique

The majority of photographers are consummate gearfags who enjoy finding any excuse to buy a new camera. "oh i dont have one JUST like that, i could use it as my weekend nature walk camera!" stuff like that. Anything that stands out will thus get nothing but praise from the 30 and 40somes looking for an excuse to buy and keep as much gear as possible. These people also tend towards being rich enough that spending $1000 on a single camera feels like buying a new toy to them, not a major purchase and the last of its kind to be made for years. No, the average photography hobbyist is going to buy a new camera in a few months.

Yes $1000 for a one half of a luxury item, basically a toy, that is available less fashionably but as and sometimes more functionally for a third of the price, is expensive and i make $460,000 a year. Don’t forget the world outside your pay grade, fucker, or you’re not long for this class.

You just have different priorities. Lots people spend "more than average" on their top hobbies. If you truly make 460k, and are even having to give a shit about a $2k expense, you are terrible with money.

It's the same size and weight as a Z6 pretty much. I used to own both, and neither of them I'd consider small at all. Go M43 or at least an XE4 if you care about size

I grew up dirt poor and will never, ever be able to say "$1000 is nothing". I was able to pay for college because I bet $1000 of my only $5000 (life savings) on 0DTE calls on fucking SOXL. I made $190,000 that day. $1000 is opportunity. All money is opportunity. Doing anything with it that doesn't pay dividends is stupidty.

You can spend as much as you want on these cameras but everything in the $500 to $5000 price bracket is the fucking same. This holds true for everything poor people think is cool - used cars, watches, computers, phones, clothes. I've bought and promptly sold a lot of it. if you're considering some $2500 sony on ebay I encourage you to try looking at DSLRs, you're not going to take better pictures until you break into the $6000 for a body price bracket.

Unless you're buying notoriously bad stuff I don't notice cheaper DSLRs falling behind in anything too important, even autofocus. The move to high end mirrorless just switches things around - the camera is worse in full sun, but better in dim or uneven light. They're just a bit uglier and the E shutter speeds are slower.

I have a far smaller body with the 27mm and don't feel it's anywhere near pocketable. It does fit well inside those drug dealer bags though, which a normal sized lens doesn't.
