the darkroom is only necessary for making prints. Those machines you see in there are enlargers that project light through the film and onto the photo paper to make the print.
These days, it's common to just scan the film digitally so you get a digital image taken off of the film you shot. And then you can make prints from the digital file as needed.
I don't have space for an enlarger, so when I develop film I do it in a small tank (and these tanks don't let light in). Also, loading the film into the tank is done inside a bag with arm holes in it that blocks out light. And then when I take the film out of the chemicals, I scan it with an Epson Perfection scanner.
But you can also just mail your film to a lab even if it's not nearby.
