What defines leica, for me, is two things:
Vintage leica: Using my granddad's film leica, I forget the model, M4 maybe, but rangefinder focusing was awkward, especially in portrait orientation, and I 100% understand why leica users tend to settle on a 28mm. It wasn't that much smaller than an olympus OM body if you used a lens longer than that, and besides the viewfinder-nose clash, an olympus was easier to use. He had all of his possessions auctioned and wealth freed up when he died and his will called for the funds to be evenly distributed among the family's children for college so that was the last of it. I'm glad I got $10k off a degree rather than a leica, really. Thanks pops.
Modern leica: A youtube review of the M11 by a professional, highly paid photographer. He called it the best camera ever, but the entire video was detailing exactly how it sucked for almost everything in the act of actually using it. He was shown shooting tethered for anything but framing at eye level, he admitted to buying a hot shoe EVF and actually not liking the optical rangefinder at all except as a gimmick, and he framed leica's need to release nearly 10 bug fix patches as a good thing and said "uh i guess their philosophy is different". The takeaway was "good colors and the lens is amazing but only photographers would notice". All in all he seemed to regret it for the most part and didn't believe many people unaware of the leica name noticed or cared about its effect on his photos. I don't intend to buy one of these ever and if I got it as a gift i wouldn't use it that much.
Only a Leica™ is good enough. Shoot authentic.
