Should I buy a used Nikon R6 for €900/$950 to get into photography? Or should I buy something new like a Canon eos R10? Or should I just give up if I don't have 2 grands to spend and wait until I win the lottery?

Get a Sony
Every other mount is dead or anti consumer
Sony make all the most important parts for every camera make but canon, and canon are the worst for being anti consumer, they rely on cheap bodies but overpriced lenses and they send cease and desists to any company that dares make autofocus lenses for their bodies.

If you're just getting into photography, it doesn't really matter what you get, after a while you will know what you actually need. My tip would be not to overspend on the body, get some nicer lenses instead. And most importantly, just go out and shoot instead of chasing gear ;)

Do you have anything specific you want to photograph? Does it need to be light and inconspicuous? In general unless you want something new and mirrorless you don't have to spend a lot of money. You could get a Nikon D700 or 5D Mark II for a couple of hundred bucks and those cameras while older are still great.

They can deliver great quality but they can also be a massive pain in the ass to use. D5100 is a more sensible choice than either, and cheaper. Or 6D/5D Mark III and reach bliss. Fuck even D600/D610. 5D Mark II is a miserable camera to use and only worth buying if it's the most expensive you can afford that allows you to adapt stuff.

If his budget is $1000 he should get a $300 lens+body kit and then spend the rest on a tripod, lighting, umbrellas/softboxes, backgrounds and such

Why would I buy into a more expensive system, that's got larger more cumbersome bodies, worse color, worse ergo, less customisation, fewer niche options, much smaller 2nd hand stock, worse resale and worse autofocus, so i can spend extra money on a clunky adapter that gives worse than native performance?

Just going with Sony in the first place makes much more sense, all you're missing out on is Nikon lenses, and some of those are just rebadged last generation tamron lenses with a 30% price increase slapped on.

Z6 is a great choice if used, Nikons are very reliable
I'd never buy a new Nikon (battery weaker than Sony's, A7III last three days of intensive shooting, Nikon will last half a day) and I'd never buy a used Sony (weak shutter, weak IBIS mount)

Used R6 is a great choice. They are pretty reliable if you don't get errors (electronics is the weakest part of R5/R6)
New R6 is also lags behind Sony, just because of weaker (but still good) sensor. Though, even if it have weaker dynamic range, ISO perfomance is really solid on R6

Z6 have better sensor, R6 have better AF, battery and so on

What I hate about R6 is the ugly design
