>What is your favourite Aspect Ratio?
I have an inappropriate liking for 12:5; that whole cinematic thing. When occasionally posting here, I'll go the purist route of 3:2.
For IG I used to just crop to and post 1:1 and I would compose for that, but after a while I branched out into 4:5 (the best for vertical screens, plus the length goes beyond 1080 pixels), 5:4, and the widest maximum of 1.91:1 (once in a while I'd go wider and add black bars to fill out the frame, but it's usually not worth it). Sadly, wide photos look like shit on IG. Too small. Very occasionally I'll post ultrawide photos to Twitter, where they can be expanded.
Sadly, as a phonefag I am restricted to shooting in 16:9 and my only other options are 1:1, 4:3, and 18.5:9 (my phone's screen).
As they say, 16:9 is the perfect compromise ratio for broadcast television, which is why it was chosen as the standard.
I enjoy cropping and experimenting with different ratios. I guess that's why it's sometimes good to shoot 'loose', so it's easier to crop in different ways.
>Why is 9:4 not more popular for wide screen? It's a very mathematically pleasing ratio imo
Well they used to have something close to it, with 2.21/2:1. 2001: A Space Odyssey had that ratio.
It just seems to have fallen away, like 1.66:1. Films are either 1.85:1 or 2:39:1 these days, unless watching in IMAX 16:9 or 4:3.
