Dear gearfags, why rangefinding ?

Hello it's me again from this thread.

I've done some "research" and I've came to the conclusion that I don't understand rangefinding... Why can't I just buy a SLR ? Why would I need a complex mechanism to find the range of my subject when I can just look through my lens ? I looked at 35mm with a waist level viewfinder SLR because I think it look ultra cool (I've taken a look at my gf Rolleiflex 2.8 and I really liked it). What do you guys think about a canon f1 ? Am I retarded ?

Rangefinders exist solely because making a reliable, accurate, and most importantly COMPACT SLR was harder and more expensive than coupling a rangefinder (an existing device) to a focusing ring and telling people to stay over f4.

After the release of the Olympus OM system the use of rangefinders became personal preference and the domain of the unusually long nosed 35mm enthusiasts. They pretty much became a meme because rangefinders are unusable with telephoto lenses and it's worse in every single way unless your nose is huge.

Ppls in linked thread talk about "mirror slap" because I want to do long exposures for night photography. Is it a long nose gearfag mirage or is this a real thing I should worry about ? Keep in mind I'm not a pro and will never sell my shit but will come here everyday post a hate thread about you if I make blurry pics because of this problem

The mirror shock on most film SLRs is almost nothing, it's mostly an astrophotography and medium format SLR concern. Mirrorless cameras without EFCS and DSLRs, for some reason (thicker mirrors? plastic bodies?) have more recoil.

If mirror shock ever becomes a concern it's super easy to just use mirror lockup mode, you prepare the picture, put the mirror up and then release the shutter. Or use live view, same thing. It's mostly concern trolling from mirrorless consoomers though.

DSLR mirror slap is some shit. Something they did either with the plastic construction or heavier mirrors since they now have to be reflective and pass light through to PDAF sensor.

Mirrorless cameras also have detectable shutter shuck because the shutter has to close before opening again unless you have EFCS enabled.

I know tom, that K1's nothing special, but DSLR mirrors must be heavier or something in the build complexity can resonate. Larger shutter mechanisms compared to film cameras too. The old OM have horizontal cloth shutters that don't introduce any shake.

Some people will tell you, they are, some people will tell you they aren't, it's up to you to decide what you want to or need to work with in order to get the results you want or need. Coming from a dslr, to mirror less, my pro tipp is to try the body as extensively as you can, mainly because of ergonomics, and then decide. But at the end of the day just do whatever makes you happy, that's the point of this hobby.

No, either get one with mirror lock up if it bothers you, rhe thing about long exposure is its that, long, a minor vibration from the mirror is going to be imperceptible over the entire exposure time, it's only an issue at slow speeds down to maybe a second at most

It's an objectively less direct experience, with DSLR you look through the lens. With mirrorless you look at a screen that the sensor sends data too. That mini screen is the electronic viewfinder. Mirrorless cameras are basically camcorders with bigger sensors that can take high resolution stills.

oh and also DSLR gets better battery life and your can look through the viewfinder even if you have no battery in them because it's all glass.The sensors give you the same image quality, sensor tech peaked in like 2014. DSLR gives you a lot more bang for the buck if buying used. They also tend to balance longer lenses better.

Interesting. I was thinking of replacing my old dslr because some gear in the mirror mechanism shit out and the mirror won’t move anymore. i was looking at getting a mirrorless to avoid that ever happening again

Of course you don't

easier to get focus accuracy (align planes and you're good) and lighter/shorter "normal" primes (ex : the canon 50mm f1.8 LTM weight a third of a canon 50mm f1.8 FD)

focusing with a WLVF on a 35mm is a chore, but otherwise the F1 is a wonderful camera.

That would have happened on a DSLR as well. The chinese sweatshops they had make that batch of shutters for the A7III fucked every last one up. You must be new to photography if you don't know that.

What sony did differently was they pulled a pentax. They did not admit any fault because the failure tended to occur out of the warranty period or it wasn't "statistically significant" - echoing how pentax responded to things like failing aperture blocks, failing SDM motors, and failing mode dials.

And by no coincidence at all, pentax and sony share the same US repair center. Precision Camera Repair.

With a DSLR you look through the lens, off a mirror, through a focusing screen and a translucent LCD, through a prism, and then through another lens assembly. It's an imprecise system at this point that used to exist as a higher precision focusing aid for telephoto users but is that no longer (lowered precision + DSLRs have translucent mirrors to pass the image to a PDAF sensors instead of focusing off the low precision OVF assembly). All of this is additional stuff to fail or fall out of spec. If you want to preview DOF the viewfinder goes uselessly dark.

With mirrorless you are seeing something as close to the image you will take as anyone has ever been able to. You see a very faithful approximation of the detail and dynamic range available. If you want to preview DOF, the viewfinder gets a bit noisy. You can magnify any part of the image to check critical focus far beyond the accuracy of your eyes (and any SLR system because all the AF processing is done off the sensor plane with no additional mirrors or optics to alter the image). Want to shoot APS-C crop on full frame? You get an actual magnified APS-C FOV in the EVF instead of... framing lines. It's a much simpler, higher precision system. You can also get less camera vibration in all shooting modes because you'll never have mirror slap. The batteries die a little faster but in real use, DSLRs don't last that much longer... everyone with one uses live view and chimping to check their exposure. Digital doesn't have the highlight DR of film yknow.

Well I've found a Nikon F2 with a f1.4 50mm lens for around 100$ in my city. In one hand 1.4 seems useful to have most light inside the sensor, on the other hand I would like to do some street photography (oh no god forgive me blabla kys I just like it) and I don't seem myself use 1.4 ever since I would prefer to have a broader focus. So now the contender to the Nikon F2 is just buying a light tripod and keep using my Rollei 35.

Picrel is yesterday at the Taiwan national museum, there's also two of the 4 original texts that there used to write the new testament (if I understand correctly, they were supposedly written 130 years after the birth of Jesus which means more time separate me from the birth of géneral De Gaulle the legend that crated modern France than those pages and Jesus) I thought skizos visitors from /X/ and /Pol/ would find it cool
