Anybody shoot this stuff?
I have been looking it up on Flickr and the photos look really good. It’s also cheap.

Am I missing something here or is this actually a good option for film?

you can't really go wrong with black and white film, its the purist film of choice, all colour stocks you're relying on some chemists interpretation of colors which can make or break your photo, but b&w its up to you the photographer to make the photo and the silver gelatin just delivers

the "cheap film" thing is kind of funny you only save a dollar or two. film is expensive as hell.

fomapan is perfectly fine. fomapan 100 is hella smooth. fomapan 400 shot and developed at 1600 is based.

the differences in the image are subtle as hell. it doesn't matter. nobody will know you switched from hp5 to this shit. and even if you were published, nobody would ask. the biggest difference being whether or not the base curls like an annoying cunt when you try to scan it.

yeah i shoot foma 400 at 1600 lol
it's not that much cheaper than ilford if you bulk roll though so ill probably switch to hp5 soon. also developing (via lab) is a big bulk of cost per shot so even though it's 60% the price of ilford overall it's not hugely cheaper.

fair enough, difference is £70 vs £90 here. so about £1 extra per roll. factor in lab dev then it's £17 vs £16 total which is negligible. looks like you self dev though if you're printing.

fortunately developing black and white is super easy. rodinal looks fine and its single-use and lasts forever. use water instead of a stop bath. some vinegar based shit as a fixer.

wow this pic is great! I love the footprints in the foreground leading to tiny hikers in the midground, contrasted with the sand. the gradient of the sand up to the mountain and the flare right in the middle of the frame.

very desolate and very desert-y, it looks dry as hell. nice shot!
