I'm a firm believer that it did in fact cost as much as it does now and that we just had a "golden era" for film cost back in the 2010's when NOBODY was shooting film and it was all about that sweet sweet digital full frame
DSLR megapixel race. Remember when 36 megapixels was a lot? Still is kinda but much more accessible now.
