it's where you take photos to showcase the "look" of your equipment rather than to have interesting content, ie: taking photos of a mostly empty scene with lots of glowing lights to show off the grain and halation of a film stock, looking for flowers to photograph using velvia, running around at night taking random snapshits of colorful stuff to increase the characteristic noise, low-bit color and harsh blow-out of an older CCD sensor.
