Unironically zero-waste, (full image circle) but is incredibly expensive.
For normie/consumer/pro (not government spycraft and literal war machines) you just use a 4:3 or 1:1 sensor and capture the whole circle on the square and ignore the black edges around it. Same effect in practice. Just cheaper and less sensor surface area to gather the light but gives much of the same look.
