or is the use of ND filter or post editing to film a "night' scene in the middle of the day the laziest form of cinematography?

Yeah, you can clearly notice it too. At least in old movies. Watched Bridge over the river Kwai recently and thought about it. Although the old stuff perhaps gets a pass because it was harder back then.
