Same thing that undermines most of the internet discussion forums: "harsh but fair criticism" that turns out to just be circlejerking runs off everybody who was willing to put themselves out there, and the people who stick around with nothing to show have nothing better to do than be know-it-alls and run their mouths about what they imagine the right answers to be without doing anything.

Every once in a while someone shows up with something actually interesting, but you probably won't see them twice once all is said and done.

I dont get it either. Photography is not the only hobby that has died over the last 10 years. There must be something more going on.

I think their is just more to talk about from a book or a song than there is from a photo. I mean for a photo you just post the photo. What more is there to say? People end up just talking about gear which has all become generic and all the same.

Its hard to meme when Sony, Nikon, Pentax, Canon, Fuji all make exactly identical cameras.

Because photography as a hobby is mainly for nerds who want an "artistic" hobby but don't have a creative soul, and are much more interested in camera as machine rather than photography as artform.
In music forums people will discuss albums made by actual musicians, in literature forums people will discuss books by published authors. In photography forums people just post snaps they took and hope for praise, because they're not actually interested in photography, they're only interested in their own work. Occasionally someone might mention work by a known photographer but it's always the same boring long dead fucks that everyone knows. Ask any amateur photographer who their favourite CURRENTLY WORKING photographer is and they have no answer. Except maybe Leibowitz because she's the only photographer they can think of who's still alive lmao.

Online communities being retarded doesn't mean that there aren't good photographers. Also /p/ee had regular discussion about many good photographers even its theocratical and philosophical side. It is all recorded in the archives. Many oldfags are now working in photography world. It is just that from past 4 years or so this board got totally fucked with gearfagging and other anons accepted their defeat. Also jannies played an important role in its downfall. All of the artfags are whining about gearfagging for more than 13 years but jannies have done jack shite. Common example is /ic/ they've limited the gear discussion to one thread only.

Amateur and hobbyists get too emotionally attached to their limited amount of work and thus can't discuss it without becoming insecure. This extends to gear and technique, along with interacting with others with the same interests.

There's a book called The War of Art, small/short excellent read for someone interested in breaking out of feeling amateurish. One of the big things is simply to accept that you shouldn't be emotionally upset if others don't see your work the same way you do; emotionally attaching yourself to a handful if pictures is very limiting for growth and maturity as either and artist or craftsman.
