>light transmission doesn't matterThere are days when not even 6400 would get you anything at higher shutter speeds or at dusk so how could doubling your light with a faster lens not matter? Also, why wouldn't you compare it to D850 or even A7IV with a faster lens? Even setting ISO performance aside, you can just double your shutter speed or slightly raise it while dropping ISO. You have way more flexibility with a faster lens.
300mm is a really good place to be for balance because you can get fast lenses for reasonable prices and weights. Going beyond 300mm, dipping below f/5.6 is just cheaping out. I realize these are differing opinions, but you can just use the same logic on your lens:
>not enough reach at only 400mm>not sharp enough to crop to 500mmYou already defined your gimmick/cope standards for going wide. How long do you have to go to reach that threshold? Also, at what aperture do you figure cope comes into play in a telephoto? For me, it's anything slower than f/5.6. Full stop. (Heh).
