Hi everyone, I want to start a thread about this lens. I recently bought it to have a 35mil, but so far I am extremely disappointed. Pictures I take are riddled with chromatic aberration. I wanted to ask around if it is a common thing and I've just wasted 200 bucks or I have a faulty unit. Also, if it just sucks are there any tips to work around this (I tried to fiddle a little, but no luck).

It's a simple fix, stop down. Anything wider than f/2.8 on full frame is tasteless anyways, it gives you the mumblecore DSLR look.

I mean, you're still right... I tested out most DX options years ago and noticed it needed to be stopped down, just for different reasons. This and the 10-24 had pretty bad chromabs wide open.

You bought an old DSLR wide angle lens. They suck. For decades only rangefinders could have highly corrected lenses unless you wanted to spend a lot of fucking money on a huge retrofocus lens or limit yourself to longer focal lengths. The mirror box was in the spot a lot of correcting elements could have gone for normal and wide angles.

Mirrorless cameras open up that length used for the mirror so they can correct those aberrations. You on the other hand have to save up for a big pro lens or never take a photo at an aperture larger than f5.6. The larger max aperture basically only exists to make your viewfinder usable.

This is what DSLRs lead to if you want a 50mm f1.4 that’s highly corrected. Mirrorless seems huge until you put it next to this. Sony’s 50mm f1.2 gm is a little over half the size. The 85mm part of the set is even bigger. Sony’s 85mm f1.4 gm is half as big.

Lens designers love mirrorless and rangefinders and hate DSLRs. Removing the mirror was inevitable as people wanted more megapixels and sharpness for enlargements and additional reach.

post so we can see
it's a fine lens for the price, stopping down helps a lot with CA, even just f2.2-2.5, and correcting in post can help a lot too
you can still find CA even on much more expensive lenses
not a problem with the lens itself, more an issue with unrealistic expectations

that's a 1-click fix in post, and definitely can find much more expensive lenses that exhibit worse

Yeah, the Nikkor DX lenses do suffer from aberration, but it's super easy to fix in post. Stopping down to f4-5.6 should make it less pronounced when needed.

$200 is a bit much. I think I paid about $100 for mine. But it's not a bad lens, so I don't think you got ripped off or anything. It's still way nicer and sharper than the 18-55mm kit lens. I did a ton of night photography with it, on my D5300.

35mm DX is not a wide angle lens you fucking retard. For this focal length the biogon vs distagon retrofocal conversation is irrelevant.

35mm and below are traditionally considered "wide angle lenses". But in the modern age, especially for APS-C and MFT, 35mm isn't really that wide. It's just semantics. Chill.

35mm FF equivalent and below is considered wide angle, you fucking retard. ANGLE anon, that's the keyword here. If you managed to put a real, not FF equiv 35mm lens on a smartphone, the ANGLE certainly wouldn't be WIDE.

Fun fact: this lens also works on full frame cameras with very little vignetting at wider apertures. Pic related is a test shot with Nikon f801s using the 35mm f1.8 dx.

Wow, thanks, I had no idea. I was considering getting the 28mm for indoor shooting, but this could make a perfectly serviceable F43 wide angle. It has quite a bit of distortion, but that can be corrected.
