iphone 14 pro max shots are strong contenders with canon FF + an older, shittier lens and only in low light with pixel peeping do the fine details start to get noticeably worse. of course sony FF with superior sensor tech and a newer better lens would mog it, but still. i doubt your budget aps-c camera with a kit zoom can beat an iphone if canon't with an ancient dslr lens barely manages.

The only used APSC cameras that are cheaper than FF have lolnolenses and somehow get softer results than FF with the same lenses (possibly light bouncing around in the mount - add the cost of a speedbooster if it even exists).

"Full frame is sharper" basically only means "sony full frame is sharper". Most full frame lenses can't really achieve the level of sharpness for a 45mp or 62mp sensor where you'd really see it. DSLR era glass rarely did. Most nikon Z and canon RF glass doesn't, while sony E mount has a wealth of ridiculously sharp lenses.

They're roughly equivalent and there's nothing wrong with Sigma.
The differences between them won't make or break a photo, you only need to be wary with vintage glass from before the time that color became popular for it didn't always have decent coatings.

all of these above are the sharpest lenses ever to be made and when it comes to sharpness they outperform every other lens ever made. theres also one sigma lens but i forgot which one it was. You guys were talking about sharpness, not anything else and as far as sharpness goes the list is 100% correct albeit missing 5-10 lenses but still correct nonetheless. even DXO and other sites that test lenses show these lenses to be the sharpest ever lenses and even cringe youtube pixel peeping review channels say the same.

yeah that lens is also one of the sharpest lenses ever made, probably in the top 5 together with Otus 100mm, 90mm sony macro, 50mm voigt apo, 85mm yongnuo and the 58mm Z noct. actually its probably even sharper than the 90mm and the voigt, its probably in the top 3, but we would need a pixel peeper or someone in DXO to do the tests. 135 GM is one of my primary lenses

Literally every objective measurement ever done on a reviewer-acquired sample of that lens places it as firmly average so you're just seeing talent overriding gear, unless zeiss quality control is that shit. Better photographers take sharper photographs. Better photographers make money off their photographs. The 55mm f1.8 is sony's nifty fifty that isn't a bit shit (the 50mm f1.8 is really a bit shit).

If the 55 f1.8 ZA is one of the sharpest then so is its close-scoring cousin (that is actually a tiny bit sharper wide open and in the center), the 85mm f1.8, which is barely off by any noticeable amount of resolution.

Perhaps lens sharpness doesn't make as much of a difference as you think it does, and it's just talent in the end.

bro DXOmark and other testers literally use a laser machine that is made specifically to test lens sharpness and/or MTF performance. when they do lens tests they do it from a 10 lens sample (some do it from an even bigger sample size) because colors, MTF performance and sharpness can vary from lens to lens even with same product line lenses and in case of DXO, 7 out of 10 lenses scored higher than the sony 90mm macro and 3 that didnt were almost as sharp as the 90...

idk where you got your info about sony 55mm 1.8 za not being sharp but your source is wrong. literally every fashion, fine art, portrait and product photographer who owns a sony camera also owns at least one copy of this lens. myself included. yes, its that good. its 900 bucks and you basically have a mini zeiss otus.

So I'm looking at the front page and I couldn't help but notice... Let me jump in by saying that I use Sonys 55mm f1.8 ZA for portrait work. From hundreds of lenses I've used and tested over the past 15 years, I can very confidently say that 55mm f1.8 ZA is one of the sharpest. I don't have any charts to go by but looking at all the images I took over the years, this little dude produces some of the sharpest images, on top of having those amazing, soft tones and the smooth highlight falloffs. Even when looking at this 70% downsized/compressed JPEG, you can see just how sharp this lens is - and that's from a 33MP sensor on the a7IV! Lens performs even better on the a1, a7RIV and a7RV.

Why did opticallimits and lenstip both find it had average sharpness? Maybe because they tested it based on photos taken with the lens using a real camera, sony sensor stack included and varying focus positions, instead of shining lasers through to a special detector.

All these lenses are so close it's not worth making distinctions. I'm going to spoil it for you in case you don't want to go down the rabbit hole: The 135mm f1.8, 35mm f1.4 GM, and 20mm f1.8 average sharper than all of these. The 40mm and 50mm f2.5s are about as good as these. The 50mm f1.8 sucks on the charts, IRL it has "classic" performance where it's just impossibly soft wide open but sharpens up fast. IRL it's very hard to tell the sharpness of any of these lenses apart.

Pff, sharpest. Modern lenses are all the sharpest if you ask someone that owns one.

It's more like: 55mm f1.8 is a good focal length for portraits, and is the best and most affordable nifty-fifty type lens on E mount. The f2.5 G is slower, the GMs have a little wash out against bright lights and are bigger and more expensive than the plentiful and cheap 55mm f1.8. Since it's a useful lens it finds its way into the hands of pros who take better photos than amateurs given the same gear.

Almost like it doesn't really matter unless it's a major optical flaw.

thats what both of the anons you replied to said are you blind or just can't read? i used to sell used cars in the range of 10 to 15k and i was taking pics with some shitty cheap canon camera with a stock zoom lens and after going to buy a new camera i chose sony a7iv and literally everyone both on the internet and in real life, literally everyone recommended me the 55mm. now that i know more about photography i can see why. that lens is also both used and recommended by literally every pro photographer ive seen on the internet, from fucking fashion to sports to weddings.

when a lens is recommended by literally everyone and when literally everyone says its one of the sharpest lenses then that means the lens probably fucking is one of the sharpest , just a hunch taht i have

you say its shit because it has slow focus or leans towards magenta tones? thats completely irrelevant in the era of lightroom and photoshop
