A lot has been talked about the way AI will destroy photography as an art and whatnot, but that's missing the point. The widespread use of AI should destroy the illusion that photos are truth. Back in the day no one had this delusion that photography reflects truth, but then came f/64 with its anti-pictorialist stance. Still, Adams was adamant about making photos, and extensive manipulation of exposure and other things was the norm.
Fast forward a few years, WWII is in the horizon already. There's a need to equate photography with truth in the minds of the viewers. Here the (((NYC school of photography))) begins, priming the ground for propagandist frauds like (((Robert Capa))) who'll be in charge of selling an illusion of truth. Simultaneously with Capa there's manipulation afoot erasing some war crimes and creating others. It's no coincidence that MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art, located in Manhattan) acquired a few Weegee photos as early as 1943. It's relatively common knowledge that MoMA was a CIA front. Speaking of CIA, what a "coincidence" it is that John Ford, OSS agent and film director was there to record the Pearl Harbor false flag in minute detail as it happened, right?
Well, back to MoMA, that same museum (together with Magnum) would later be the epicenter of elevating street photography to the category of art. It has nothing to do with its supposed artistic value, but the goal was to push photography as unaltered truth in the minds of the people. To make photos unquestionable.
In short, if you're a streetfag you just got memed into liking a product that only exists to legitimize photography as a vessel of truth in your mind, in order to solidify it as a vessel of untruth (the lie that only those telling it know is a lie, but that they push down the throats of the naive masses).
Why have the ones in charge allowed AI to become widespread? Probably for the next level of untruth, "certified photos". You better enjoy the ride, because it never ends.
