Ilford HP5 Trouble

I've recently got a new SLR, a Vivitar X-V1. I accidentally shot some 400 rated B&W with the camera set at 1600. The light meter showed every shot as balanced, and I'm just wondering if they'll be blown out. There were no direct sky shots, it was overcast. Most were facing the ground, of gravestones or flowers. I only snapped 5-6 photos, how fucked will those be?

Shoot the rest at 1600 and develop it pushing 2 stops, it's not the end of the world. It'll come out grainier, you may actually like it. Lots of people use that grain as a crutch.

Keep going and push the film in development (overdevelop, because it is underexposed)

The fun of black and white is that you have no real reason to shoot at box speed

You have the freedom to push/pull easier, and get more grain? Cause its not as finicky as C-41?

you have a couple options

1) set your iso back to 400 and shoot the rest of the roll at box speed, those 6 photos will be UNDERexposed by 2 stops but no big deal, you have 30 shots left. HP5 is pretty gracious so they MIGHT work out but they might be shit in the end

2) leave your iso at 1600 and shoot the rest of the roll as >>4173830 says and push the film in development assuming you're doing it yourself. if you're taking it to a lab you should ask if they push/pull b&w film otherwise you have a full roll of underexposed photos.

personally, I love the look of pushed HP5 over box speed but I wouldn't know that if I didn't shoot at box speed at least once so get another roll after this one.

No problem anon, glad to help. It will certainly give it a distinct look. Alternatively shoot the rest at 400 but develop at 1600, you'll get thicker negatives. Best results will probably come from using the whole thing at 1600 though.

Hp5 and foma400 do fine at 1600, slightly more contrast on the toes but the results aren't dramatic in flat light. It makes things pop more when you shoot in low light and overcast. You can also slap on a heavy contrast filter like an orange or blue or something and shoot in daylight.

stand develop it. You can shoot a roll of HP5 ranging from 200-1600 and they'll all come out fine, but 200 will be flatter and the contrast will be harsher for every stop under. i really recommend HC-110 over rodinal for stand developing HP5.

dude, do something actually creative finish the roll at 1600, then reload it and shoot again at ~500ISO as a subtle double exposure

It's easy, actually, you only need to remember/mark the sprocket holes that got caught in the spool and the transfer rollers. For max flexibility make every shot of basically the same thing so you can know what you're double exposing.

In what way does your electronic SLR prevent you from doing all this? I almost never shoot at box speed in mine and they're all electronic and AF-equipped. My only regret is that my Elan 7 is a plain one. I wanted the E version but I got an offer I couldn't refuse.

It's even easier to do on a electronic one, the roll gets perfectly realigned every single time and it also has options for multiple exposures without having to play with the rewind lever and risk breaking something.

Roll would align perfectly on prewind camera, but there aren't many like that, I guess you can hope the electronics are consistent enough to get the film aligned if the film leader is on the arrow both times?

On the Elan they are dead-on every time. And it has a leader-out option for when you rewind, quite handy. I change rolls mid-roll and that way I can change ISO or color/B&W on the fly.
