hi guys, so I kinda fell down the CCD rabbithole and got myself a Lumix LX3, heres a few shots that I deem presentable from my bands last tour
(all shots are raw, iso 800 with a simple black and white preset, no added grain and very little sharpening)

I mean, the colors are sweet for what the camera is on base ISO, but the color noise is absolutely horrid once you push it even a little bit.
The way it looks once you convert it to bnw though, small 10mpx sensor makes the grain look nice and big, just the way I like it, almost filmlike(?).

welcome to the lx3 club. I bought mine a long time ago, but kept it because it has such a distinct look. The ergonomics and controls are just... fucking wrong, but the lens and sensor have kept it in my rotation for ten years. The lens isn't super sharp and the sensor is really contrasty so as long as you don't push your raws you can get some great images - especially portraits.

Also, I thought of a few things I've learned over the years with mine. For landscape / whatever, f4 is the "sharpest" aperture and I keep it zoomed out. For portraits / people, I shoot it wide open all the way zoomed in, and fill flash - which actually exposes very intelligently. ISO 400 and above is grain city, which you might want depending on the look you're going for. To keep your startup time quick, there's a setting buried somewhere to restore the zoom on startup to the last setting which is nice. Don't be afraid to beat this thing up a little too. It seems fragile but I promise it isn't . I've got dents on the dents covering the entire camera and lens cap as well as a scratch on the element and it still functions like the day I bought it. Really impressive camera.

very nice shot! i ended up shooting it on program, wide open, iso800-1600 - it really works well in black and white, its got the >texture i seek lol. but the color grain is whack after 400, as you said. and the little flash is surprisingly powerful (pic related, though this one is ripped from facebook so the quality is a little... shit)

lx3 kinda pricy for what it is personally, took a look at the fs3, fs5, and tz3.

is the lx3 somehow better than those point and shoots or does it not matter?

Not sure about those other cameras, but the LX3 can shoot raw, and also has full manual controls. That's a big plus already. I'm not sure what prices you're seeing, but I paid 100€ for mine, and that seems pretty reasonable.

That list is severely lacking. For one, there's a million different canon's that are ccd. All of them do raw, since magic lantern and CHDK exist. Also, every pre cmos digital camera, is ccd as well, so that's further millions from other manufacturers as well.

Exactly, I reduce the colour noise by about 25 in lightroom. I don't mind the luminance noise as I feel its quite "filmic".

Took the LX3 and my D3500 out in Amsterdam. I didn't actually get any photos I liked from the D3500, but plenty from the LX3, more and more convinced there is something truly special about this camera.

Big for a snapshitter, but I've got an S570 for this exact reason and it'd been a great camera. I also have a P340, but I feel it's too full of compromises to enjoy. I've always wanted to try a P7k or a canon G12. Start a thread and let us know anon.

I don't really know actually. Is an LX3 or P7K digishit? They were pretty high end cameras of their day and have stood the test of time. I know the RX100 is still the darling of compacts but I bought and sold a MKIII that didn't impress me at all. I'm actually taking my S570 and LX3 on a trip at the end of the week so I'll have some new stuff when I get back. I'm taking my beat to shit FE 20 out tonight to see if I can get something interesting. I want to hate this camera and don't really like lolympus in general but the images it produces are so fucking good that a bought new batts for the piece of shit.

Also here's a couple S570 snaps from my back yard before I head out. It's perfectly acceptable for it's size (but that's certainly not true of all of them. I had an S3100 that I really wanted to like, but the colors and lens were just awful. Ended up going back to my S570).

Honestly it's not much different to the LX3 really. The main difference is you get a wheel to change aperture and shutter speed instead of a d-pad type thing. Not sure it's actually better, has the typical issue where you click the wheel to switch between changing aperture and shutter speed but you end up accidentally clicking it while trying to turn it fast. If you want one just trawl ebay and bag whichever one is cheap.

Cheers, yeah usually i just apply like 25% or less NR to clean it up a little and tone down the chroma noise if i'm not making it monochrome. That one I was just screwing around when i first got it and had it on jpeg by mistake.

they also perform really well at high iso and as >>4196763 pointed out, 800 iso is really pushing these old cams but they still deliver with a pleasing and subtle grain pattern.

On paper, they're functionally the same, but the results you'll get will be wildly different. I've owned a G9 and still own an LX3. It's hard to explain, but I'll try. The G9, like all my Nikons (and I really like my coolpixs) is more of a correct and accurate representation of the scene. The Lumix doesn't have any errors or serious flaws, but the photos have some kind of undefinable character. I can't really describe it, but I know one of my LX3 shots on sight. Just like I know one of my P340 shots on sight. Its photos just feel like they have a lot of depth if that makes sense.

I don't know about the GR but I have a GRD3 and there is a setting where the LCD is always off even after turning the camera on and off again. I also want a viewfinder as I am not a fan of using LCD but the dam things worth as much or more than the camera.
