Is using this film cheating? I love the look of it and want to try it out but feel like it will be a crutch and my photo will look good thanks to the film rather than my photographic abilities.

Film is film. You can't get mad at the caveman for "cheating" because he found a stick that was better suited for helping him. If you go to an atmosphere that lets you use it to its potential, and make a great film stock that much better with your abilities, it isn't cheating. Post some scans since a thread died for this anyway.

It is cheating but so is editing to mimic its tones and I do it all the time. How else am I supposed to get the look I want?

cinestill loves doing damage control on youtube videos that show you get way better results shooting it at 500 since that is really what the film is. They claim removing the antihal and developing in c41 pushes the vision 3 stock to 800 but it really doesn't

Why? Gas stations is a peak 21th century. It's a symbolism. Everything that modern civilization was built on. Gas for a car, fastfood for a man. Car is a blood or modern economics, so if you're shooting urban photography, then gas station is the prime object of environment. Gas stations at night, shot with cinestill, is like monument for an epoch.

It's been done to death, people keep doing it because it's where you can find cool industrial lighting anywhere. The reason people shoot cinestill is to get the white balance wrong.

Isnt this true for literally every subject though? How many photographers are there? Literally anything you are going to photograph has been photographed a million times already unless you are a big photographer who gets access to exclusive locations.

To some extent yes but a gas station shot on Cinestill is a cliche at this point. It's not just that they look cool on Cinestill and people realize that will be the case, it's that they've seen others shoot them on Cinestill so they want their own shot of a gas station on Cinestill.

You could perhaps go to some warehouse instead or something of the sort. Even parking lots are using neutral to warm lighting nowadays, it's been a cinematic disaster.

I went past a gas station, Cinestill loaded camera with me but didn't shoot. It just wasn't aesthetic enough, it had some lame green LED lights and no illuminated signs.
