Would you please let me know if you have ever seen the night sky like in the bottom picture? I have travelled to several states in the USA, Hawaii, and Canada and have only ever seen the top picture. I'm trying to figure out if the bottom image has been edited(even though the website that I got it from says it's a "photograph").

I have never seen the sky like that with the naked eye and I doubt anyone else has either, but photos like that are not fake they are just taken with the camera on a tripod

Well, not faked, but edited in a way that's bringing out details that aren't there? I'm not sure how to explain since I only have limited experience in Photoshop. I know this isn't an astronomy board, but the bottom picture looks like a nebula or something, but those are supposed to be extremely far away, right? I'm confused.

that's the milky way, and they mostly just did a long exposure to pick it up. it's always there you just don't normally see it.

Yes, every non-cloudy non-hazy moonless night.
I haven't been able to get a photo like that yet, as I'm a noob at photography and haven't got round to mounting the camera on my telescope's tracking tripod yet. And my camera is a bottom of the range 10+yr old canon dslr... /p/ says canons are teh suck in low light, and I think they're right.
The only difference between that pic and irl, is irl it's just white & doesn't have that pinkish tint.
If there's any amount of moonlight it'll wash out the sky enough so you won't see the milky way, also it's rare to get air clear enough in summer (haze) to see it. And you need to be out in the dark at least 10 mins for your night vision to kick in. But in winter time it's a common sight. It can be quite a surprise just how bright it is once your eyes are adjusted.

Naked eye view isn't too far off bottom pic in a Bortle 1 (no light pollution) or 2 (no lp looking above horizon) zone. Longer exposures can see more than the human eye of course, and there are plenty of astro photos with a brighter and more detailed Milky Way than you can see. But no lp and about 20-30m for your eyes to fully adjust...it's close to what you posted.

You get pretty close to the bottom one if you lay out in a field in the middle of nowhere. By middle of nowhere I specifically mean rural parts of Washington/Idaho where there is virtually no light pollution (I imagine much of Alaska and Canada are the dame way but I only have experience in the PNW). Basically nowhere in Europe or in the US east of Minnesota are thay dark though.

Yeah, I've definitely seen the sky look close to the bottom pic during a trip to middle-of-nowhere-Kansas.
Without light pollution you can definitely make out the center bands of the milky way, see the color even.

It's honestly kind of sad how bad light pollution is these days, only made worse by the switch from sodium vapor lamps to LED for streetlights.

This is crucial, that's one reason why mirrorless cameras are best avoided and your best friends are a DSLR and a red flashlight

I have no problems using a mirrorless camera in the dark. It's only one eye and just barely. The OLEDs on sony have great auto-brightness functionality.

It's much better than trying to look through a dim DSLR viewfinder to make sure there are no focus shifts stopped down.

It's been a long time. My mom and I would frequently go on trips from Las Vegas and El Paso back in the 90s/early 00s, and it was beyond beautiful. It was like you could see the whole universe out there, it was even brighter and more intense than your bottom example. Nevada/Montana/Oregon/Utah have some good low light pollution areas, if you wanna snap some pics I would recommend somewhere in that area. Check out light pollution maps for a better idea.

The details are there, you just don't see them with your eyes. It's what you would see if you had better eyes.

The dust clouds you see are not so much far away as they are very tenuous. Still, in a dark place you can appreciate the cloudiness of the Milky Way with your naked eye, but not as clearly as the pic, and monochrome (because the cells in your eye that detect color don't work in low light).

Yea I have seen sky like that. About 10 miles north of arriba, Colorado. Bum fuck nowhere 25 miles east of perryton Texas. 50 miles north of Clovis New Mexico. The milky looked just like that, but the sky was black like the top picture, so all the soft blues really came out of the Milky Way and weren’t washed out by that purple background.
The purple sky in the photo just means it was a long exposure, the brightly lit foreground shows it probably had several photos stacked. Camera was probably out on a tripod all night. It’s not an unreasonable shot, you just need to get several miles from civilization to see it like that which gets harder and harder every year as civilization expands.

You can see this after a while far away from light pollution. It will actually be bright enough to illuminate the ground enough to see it, without the moon (dark moon).

You can regularly see the Milky Way like that in NZ. Tekapo is particularly good, it’s a no light pollution town. This must be a longish exposure but nothing extreme, a few seconds would do it.
See pic, not even long enough for people to blur, it’s bright af there on a clear night.

I could clearly see the Milky Way on La Palma (Canary Islands). It doesn't look as clear as on the images ytou see, it's hazier so to speak. But easily visible if you are in a dark enough spot.

Light pollution is an actual problem. Depending on where you live you may simply NOT be able to see it unless you travel several hours.

I took this pic with my phone about a year ago in Ferryland, Newfoundland. It’s unedited, taken with an iPhone camera. I’ve never seen any sky as starry as in rural NL; it’s completely free of light pollution. The only place that’s come close is in northern Canada, just outside Yellowknife, but you’d be better off taking pics of the northern lights there anyway.

Its just a super long exposure that tracking the stars to account for the rotation of the earth. There might be some UV or IR information captured as well. Then the contrast and colors are exaggerated in post. Its not "fake", its stuff you could never see bc the camera works differently from our eyes.

Every image, except for projected slides, is edited. So much has happen, whether digital or film, to get a jpg or tiff file that looks like anything resembling our experience. There is no such thing as an "unedited" or "straight out of camera" photo. Except for maybe a projected slide.
