How to find models as an amateur photographer?

Hello all,

I've been dabbling in analog photography for a while and run an Instagram account that is mainly comprised of landscapes. I want to get into capturing images of people and was wondering if anyone had tips on how to find models or people willing to let me photograph them.

Just put out a call on your socials and you'll get a few bites.
Asking couples you know is an easy way to get started, most couples don't have nice photos together except selfies and will do it for free in exchange for some nice pics

I hang out on bike/walking trails in the university district and am very conspicuous with a tripod and battery grip and everything. During midday on a weekday works best because you get students skipping class and the odd vagabond and so-on. Usually someone will start talking to me, and half the time they're the ones that ask for a picture.

Go to parties/clubs and make friends with them, worked extremely well for me, either that or book test shoots with agencies.

bro thinks people should pay the photographer for taking photos of them lmfao

if i had to pay my clients for taking photos of them, id be in debt instead of making money with photography kek

also, i cant offer you advice i started via business connection to a local studio, soooooo i can really give you a realistic advice other than go around photo studios asking for help or ask them via email or DMs or some shit

Just legit hit them up and showcase your work, I've never done test shoots with agencies yet since I just talk to friends I've met at parties, etc. for shoots and now I get contacted by people frequently for this. Also pick who you work with very carefully.

Look into TFP shoots. You can get a model for free if it can be mutually beneficial

I mean I just befriended a bunch of them and they pay me nowadays, or we just do a collab if I'm not taking photos of them when we're hanging out. As long as you're not a creep, just take photos and have people who want to be a part of it.

Usually test shoots are free from what I know. Again it’s more about what works with your style rather than just paying a higher end one. You have to start somewhere.

If the person is just starting out and it’s test shoots, then over time people will pay once they put out more work. Again a bit of bias here because I specifically mentioned I’m friends with many, for bigger projects yes, you pay them and other people for mua, movement direction, etc. but the point is if these are just test shoots or working with clients who want photos, usually they pay you over time when you have enough work.

And if you still need more clarification, go to an agencies website and specifically request models in an email to set up a test shoot, real agencies don’t make you pay them unless you’re profiting off of these shoots in some way. Usually getting models from development sections will be much easier to set up, but again make it clear and just hit them up. They’ll tell you more details about how they work with this.

How important is social media when it comes to people's willingness to let you take photos of them? I find it difficult to get randoms to let me photograph them the few times I have inquired because with film photography they can't immediately see the photo and I guess they're worried I'm so weirdo or something?

Put quality work out there and people will ever flake on you, social media is super important if you’re working with people, communication is legit one of the most important things when working with models, don’t be a creep and also brush up on your social skills if you want to keep working with others. Alternatively you could just do stuff around the local area with families and couples, which yet again requires you to be good with people, building a following and a steady lineup of work requires you to become popular with others, partially why many don’t go into portraiture to begin with, it’s my bread and butter and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else at this point. It’s led me into meeting a wide variety of people and opportunities I couldn’t even dream of prior.

Tbh, it’s more important who you know and who you work with, I have thousands now but even when I started out two years ago at like 200 followers I was already getting work right off the bat because of who I was taking photos of.
