It didn't. Google "nature wallpaper art" and you will find ten thousand contemporary digital art pieces that look like that painting.

People just moved onto painting digitally and art evolved to the point that a boring painting of a tree in a sunset is not considered museum-worthy anymore, but that kind of art is still being pumped out round the clock by thousands of people.

It's almost unfair, this level of technical ability was extremely rare, maybe unique before color photography. And even then, photography can only deliver what has been, you needed to catch the right light to capture it and print an image. Digital visual art made this much more accessible and scalable. AI is even further, completely killing any significant in this.
But I guess this is all art problems.

If you love this kind of art, all the better. I'm not judging that, I just say: if we can produce something that produces the same effect with a faster, easier process, then what's wrong. If we cannot, I am 100% sure there is still some nerds doing it just for the feel of it.

It just got close enough for the number of people making art like that to give up, because most art consumers have 0 taste anyways and would unironically buy a fake mona lisa without noticing.
