I got a Canon FT QL from a friend of mine. The camera seems to be in working conditions, everything is working, except for the lens
It's a Canon FD 50mm 1:1.8
The aperture ring is stuck at f16
When I remove the lens and manually fiddle with the metal 'sticks' on its back it works just fine: it stays open at f1.8, and closes up to f16, so there are no problems with it
But the aperture ring is not moving, it's stuck in position
How do I fix it? Tv

From what I see the silver ring is slightly misalligned, which might be causing the aperture ring to be stuck
What do you guys think?
And how may I fix it?

I have an old Zeiss Ikonta folder - it still works, i like the image output, but it seems to be skipping/overlapping some frames when I advance the film. Is it a matter of lubrication, or is it beyond hope at this point?

That's a breech lock Canon, they work on friction unlike bayonet ones. Not very familiar with them but maybe this knowledge can help you figure it out

Get a backing paper, wind it around the spool like a normal film and run it through the camera with the back open to see if it presents any problem
Maybe it's slipping
But it's probably something simple

I don't know the answer to your lens problem but just in case you or the previous owner didn't know this - that is an FL mount camera not FD.

The FD lens will attach and work, but it'll only do stop-down metering.

You should be able to replace that lens for $50 if you can't fix it.

Double check to make sure it isn't stuck on auto (green "A" or "O") aperture, which this camera can't use anyway. You have to press the little black button on the side of the lens to get it out of auto.

I found it weird that the lens was marked as FD and from what I gathered the camera had this FL mount, although it fit just ok
If it works with stop-down metering it's good enough for me, thanks for the info
There's no black button on the side of the lens, though. Do you know if there's something similar on this specific model, or does it work just by screwing/unscrewing the ring?
It's stuck, so I don't want to force it, but I'd like to better understand its mechanism

I don't have this specific lens (they redesigned the 50mm 1.8 several times during the lifetime of the FD mount), but does it have this?

Oh nevermind, I just realized that's for proprietary Canon flash syncing.
I think this one just doesn't have that lock, so it *should* turn. I'd just get another one.

I'm pretty low on budget, to be fair I don't even have a budget, since my friend just gave me a box full of old cameras and I'm sorting out the working ones
This Canon FT seems to be in pretty good shape, everything works except for the stuck ring
Also in my country this kind of stuff is way over what one would pay in the US, so buying the f1.4 is unfortunately not an option right now

I'll see if I take it to be checked by a repairman, but if I could do it myself it would be great so that I don't end up spending more than I could right now

You can find instructions online for disassembling, cleaning, and re-assembling these lenses. Just be aware you might break it.

If you don't keep your backing papers, you can ask your local film/camera shop
I always keep them around for tests and stuff like that
They'll surely give you them for free, and also ask for some spools

so the other day i dropped my fuji clear shot M down the stairs by accident, it operates flawlessly but i'm pretty concerned about light leaks considering i couldn't quite get the body fully together (more like i was afraid to pry it apart)
is there a risk for light leaks here? and if so, how bad?

That looks bad
As it seems, there's a roll in it already, so you'll know if there are leaks when you develop it
You can stick duct tape to the gaps for now, but... expect leaks
It looks like the moving part is tilted, maybe if you post pictures of that side someone might know how to fix it

We can't tell until it gets developed
From the pictures I'm more concerned about that side gap here >>4191687 , but I don't know, maybe it leaks, maybe it doesn't because it's illuminating just a bit on the side where the cannister would be and there's possibly no light getting to the actual film, maybe there'll be a bit of fogging
Can't tell until you see the negatives
But I believe duct tape should do the trick in the mean time, and layering the tape might be a good option until you can get the cam checked

Probably the pictures that were already taken prior to the accident are ok since they the film is all rolled up and light shouldn't get past a couple of shots if there are minor breaches
I would recommend rewinding the film in complete darkness, though, just to be sure, because if there's a light leak and you rewind it, you'll be exposing all of the shots to light

that's between exposure 3 and 6, sadly it happened very early into my roll
i'll keep applying layers there but basically i was too afraid to try and pull the body back apart to tuck that part in

in blind confidence i had hoped it'd only technically reach into a bit that is closed off from the film chamber, but again we'll just have to see since i don't exactly know this cam's anatomy off the back of my hand

I would suggest something less expensive (even though Kentmere and Foma are not prohibitively costly where I'm from, they're far for expendable) either)
Take a couple more shots in bright light, in the sun etc. so that you can test whether there are any light leaks from the cassette to the winding spool
Then do the following:
>take a pair of scissors, the camera and a black canister to a completely dark place
>open up the camera, pull out a bit more of film if necessary, and then cut it out, leaving a bit of film hanging out
>place the exposed film in the black canister
>tape the canister so that a distracted person won't open it by accident
>place stickers written "BARE FILM / DO NOT EXPOSE TO LIGHT"
Take the roll to your local developer and explain to them that the canister has bare film in it, and that they should open in the dark as they would with a cassete
This way you can keep your ~30 film roll to use in another good camera or in this same camera after getting the results and seeing if there are light leaks
In the mean time you can also see what happened to the camera since it will be empty and send it to repair or even repair it yourself (you may post pictures of the camera in this thread, maybe someone might know how to fix it)

I just bought it
(Actually a relative wanted me to choose a gift and I grabbed the chance lol)
Got the 3rd version, the one with "Canon Lens FL 50mm f1:1.4 II" written on the outer ring
The first version is radioactive, so it could be/get brown, and the other two are basically the same, but the third version is the one that I found in better shape for sale
I'll only get my hands on it in July, can't wait to get it!

I normally use my Pentax K1000 and I thought I'd never find a cooler 35mm SLR, but the Canon FT QL has a timer, a mirror lifting mechanism, a battery tester, a quick-loading mechanism, and a variety of compatible lenses that are also cheap and easier to find

Update:
I brought the lens to a repair shop and it was so simple the old man didn't even charge me
He fixed it in 15min max
Not only that, but I went to get my developed roll at the other store nearby and told them about the camera and that it was then fixed
I'm a regular client, and they're always very receptive
I asked if they had any cheap films for sale for me to test the camera, see if it's working alright
They had a respooled Kodak 500T expired for god knows how since when, and they wanted to test it to see what's the appropriate ISO
So they gave me a roll and asked me to shoot metering for different ISOs and keep a record of the camera configurations
They'll also develop it for free

>got my lens fixed for free
>also got a roll for free with (including development costs) for testings
I also bought the FL 50mm f1.4 that'll arrive probably in the next week or two

Those FL 50mm f/1.4 and f/1.2 were aimed at owners of the Pellix. The reason for this was the Pellix's half-silvered mirror diverted half of the light up to the viewfinder even when taking a picture.

I grew up in a household where a Pellix was our family SLR. It was rarely used, as my parents actually preferred tiny 110 cameras and instants. I think when I used it for a high school art project may have been the first time it got used after I was born, actually. I still have it but I don't use it either - I got a FTb!

This is a Yashica Lynx 14e I did a CLA on. Had a very dirty VF and RF. The shutter sounded good and was clean so nothing required there but the body had seen better days so I serviced it. I greased the wind knob and advance lever. The RF prisms got the cotton swab treatment with some industrial-grade glass cleaner and I adjusted the shutter mechanism to fire earlier on the down stroke of the shutter button, if you have a Lynx 14 you know what Im talking about.

I also adjusted the vertical and horizontal RF alignment and cleaned the glass plate on the top. It's like new and the VF is so much more contrasty.

Use external flash, much better. And on something like an old 350D, you can use the film era flashes too. I don't think I've ever used the integrated flash on any DSLR/SLR and I think the first 36x24 one I bought that had one was my D800. I recommend the 430EX that was what I used when I had a 400D

If I remember, the mirror on that model (and many Nikon and most DSLRs) is a two piece, there's the silvered part for the viewfinder and a second part under it for the light meter. I'm betting there's an issue there.

Anyone has any experience with the Minox 35 (whatever model they are all similar enough)? I have a funny issue where the automatic exposure is working (is selecting okay enough times) but the needle in the viewfinder just refuses to move. It does work with the battery test button. I see that the meter itself is working otherwise the camera wouldnt be able to select times at all. But for some reason I guess the connection between the meter and the needle has an issue ? maybe someone has an idea

I use a new same form factor Alkaline. yes the mercury 5.4V was outlawed pretty much everywhere, which is super sad, since for cameras they provided a much more stable voltage. Tried the stack as well, I suspect that there is some issue in the circuitry because my batteries drop in voltage quickly. The service manual mentioned on some older models you need to replace a z-diode to use batteries with more than 5.4 volts. I hope I don't have to do that. Funny thing though the needle was working well at some point yesterday.
