What many people mean when they say “film” is just grain, whitebalance, and (especially for the non-photographer types) colors that look like prints that have been decaying in improper storage for decades, softness from grandpa using manual focus lenses and missing or fixed-focus lenses where everything is soft, flare.. etc.
In camera jpeg modes that mimic specific film stocks seem like a gimmick.
