Step 1: You adapt a film-era lens obviously. The optical quality is part of the look. Different lenses also have different color transmission. Using digital era lenses may make colors too harsh or result in a flat look.
Step 2: You shoot a log gamma for video or raw for stills
Step 3: Do NOT use a diffusion filter. This does not look like halation on film, that's caused by light bouncing back through the film, and is red.
Step 4: ETTR in camera
Step 5: and apply a LUT/preset when you load shit onto your computer. boost brightness, not exposure, raise the black level, and reduce contrast.

You do not need a special camera brand. In fact, fujifilm cameras are terrible and should be avoided at any cost.

You can spend ages and ages chasing an artificial aesthetic with filters and photoshop plugins and editing techniques, or you can just buy a cheap film camera and a 15 year old flatbed scanner at a thrift store and have the real thing.

when taking shot:

post-processing:

> use split toning ("color grading") to tint the shadows one color and the hilights another
> fuck with the H/S/V sliders to change the saturation and luminance of individual colors until it looks how you want it
> add grain liberally
