Took this picture a while ago with a dinky digital cam.
Getting into film photography and while I can eat the cost of getting the film developed, I would like to digitize at home. Is this viable? Are the home options going to give good results?
I've narrowed down to a few things;
1: Plustek OpticFilm 8200i SE
2. Espon V600
3: A rig with a light table and my friend's Nikon Z50

Don't really want to deal with the hassle of 3, but if any of you have experience with 1 or 2 or others, please share. Thanks.

It's not that much of a hassle

Adapt any manual lens with macro tubes, put a flash behind the slide holder, done.

Plustek will give you great results, V600 not so much and certainly worse than the Nikon. For hassle-free camera digitizing, try the Nikon ES-1 adapter.

Not so much a hassle with the actual set up, but the hassle of having to use a friends camera.

out of curiosity, why don't you want the film lab to do the scanning? find a pro photo lab and not one of those 1 hour places (do they still exist?)

35mm film is not exactly 35mp. You can use any cheap camera with more than 12mp for it, even the old ass micro four thirds cameras, and get more than just a scanner because macro lenses also function as normal lenses with slightly slower autofocus. Adding more megapixels to the scan is just resolving better grain tonality for getting your digital prints to look more filmic and sensor size wars are irrelevant here.

Have you seen the prices on that stuff? it would pay for itself to DIY very fast.

I don't have any experience with the other options you listed, but I think you'll always be disappointed by the Epson flatbeds trying to scan 35mm film. They do OK with larger format films from what I've heard. That being said, I use a Pakon F135 Plus (that has been collecting dust for 5+ years now).

i just scanned 12 rolls of film with my setup that i just put together a week ago. heres my mini blog post. prices are in australian dollar (USD is about 2/3 of this)
gear i used:
- fuji x-e2 i had from years ago (bought used for $400)
- manfrotto tripod
- nikon micro 55mm f3.5 with extension tube $150
- enthusiast scanning kit from kamera store ($333, postage was $50 lmao)
- rocket/dust blower

the alternatives was buying a plustek 8200i ai for $600 or keep using my lab which does $10 scans for a whole roll, but uncut ($15 if you give them already cut roll). i also had already shot about 30 rolls i had in my backlog to develop, so the minimum cost for scanning these was $300. as the lab gives cheaper scans for uncut rolls, unfortunately i have to re-photoflo the rolls after as they will be bent/curved from being rolled up and stored for many days (enjoy squeegee-ing 7 strips times by however many rolls you have, and hanging them up...). i heard the plustek takes minutes for scanning one frame. for my setup, i can "scan" a frame in about 5-10 seconds (but you have to edit the raw after). pic attached is my scan on the left, lab scan on the right. also the plustek cannot scan 120, but with this setup i can get "150MP" stitched scans. i can get a flextight (virtual "drum") scan in my local area for about $25 per frame (either 35mm or 120). the downside of scanning with a dslr/mirrorless is that you have to do the inversion/editing yourself. for black and white this is super easy, for color you will have to practice a whole bunch because it will most likely take a long time to get something similar to your lab. i hope any of that helps because before i did this, i had a ton of questions and was not sure which method to go with

That one produces much better results than the V600.

I rented a canon 5dsr from lensrentals to scan my 35mm negs. Before I was using a 7d. I set the camera on a tripod with the 5dsr and the 100mm 2.8. I place the neg on a makeshift neg carrier made of cardboard and that goes on a cstand and gripped. Behind that, a cstand with diffusion paper. Then a strobe with a 10degree grid on a cstand. Camera is fired remotely and tethered. The spacing of everything matters' to light the neg properly capture it without the ends going soft.
