Sony (who are the largest stakeholder in tamron) use this as their camera sales strategy, they develop technologies that cannot be beaten anywhere close to the price point they offer, and then sell the old gen of their tech to all the competition to make them reliant on them, but in doing so they perma-lock everyone else into being a generation behind.
Screens, EVF's, Sensors; it's nearly all Sony in every camera on the market. Canon make their own sensors, but they were also about a decade behind sony until very recently.
Now Sony is doing the same tactic with lenses; "here, take our old stuff, even if you throw a 50% markup on, it will still be half the price of what you can do OEM".
VW are doing the same strategy in the car space.
