28mm vs 40mm

I want to get a Ricoh GR but I can't decide on the focal length.

All my life I've been using 35mm. So 40mm is what I would be more familiar with but I feel like it might be too limiting for an always with me camera and 28mm would be nice as a 2nd camera to carry around for wider shots while using a narrow lens. Also as a cope I can always crop to a 35mm focal length. I mainly do architecture street photography (basically your typical /p/ photos).

What are your experiences with these focal lengths?

take pictures using your phone for a while, if you like it then go for the 28mm version, rather if you prefer 35mm go for the 40mm version

After spending some time with 40mm you begin to realize it makes every photo look a little shitty. Just get a 50-55mm like the 100 years of photographers before you might have known better.

40mm is my favourite focal legnth. 28mm is very difficult to make good photos in my experience.
Go for the X and use your phone for anything you need wider.

40mm is the vintage snapshit focal length. It was the standard on all the shitty fixed lens family portrait/tourist cameras and rarely used by bigger names.

50mm = 28mm > 40mm, retarded poorfag can only afford one lens and can't swing a zoom focal length

That's a good suggestion.

OP here: I have to admit the only real reason I am even considering the 28mm GR is the cool new color they released. The black and asphalt gray of the IIIx just looks so boring.

its just having a resurgence because of mirrorless. something about mirrorless, and the minds of today's lens designers, is antithetical to a good fast nifty fifty. even nikkor Z mount 50s vignette than their old AF-S counterparts and have a weird lean towards blotchier colors. slowish 40mm lenses don't suffer from this as badly, it's a focal length that does well when designers want to cram elements as close to the sensor as possible to show off how mirrorless is different.

We currently have the 28mm version because we shot a lot of landscapes during our trip. BUT I am looking to maybe buy the 40mm seeing as it helps a lot more with really capturing your subject without showing too much clutter

The real reason 50 became "normal" was because Leica originally promoted it as such, and set the precedent. If they'd chosen 35, 40, or 58 that's what everybody else would have used too.

However with OP's intended usage of "architecture street photography" I'd say get the widest lens you can. In the street ability to "zoom with your feet" is often limited. There might be a wall or something limiting how far back you can get. It's usually easier to get closer to things than to get further from them.

From what I understand they didn't use the field of view in the photo capture process, but though to find the angle of view that results from looking at a typical size photo print at typical distance. Which changed but if course no one dropped 50mm lenses. Similar to how circle of confusion size calculation is pure shamanism tied to reality from before pinch-to-zoom.

Wider lenses also have more parallax, with creates perspective distortion. Your brain edits most of this out so putting your face 2 inches from something doesn't stretch it out, but a 35mm lens will elongate close objects. Sometimes, you will get a more natural appearance with a narrower lens like a 50mm or 85mm.

It's me, not wanting to work with the focal length, because I bought this stupid Z 40mm f2, but didn't actually want to use it for what it was for. Every good photo I just crop to 50mm because when I get closer it looks just a little weird sometimes or there's too much shit in the frame otherwise. Then I look at nikon's stupid 50mm f1.8, and realize how little I give a fuck about wide open lens sharpness when presented with a 50mm that is the size, weight, and cost of a small zoom for a DSLR, and wish I would have bought a sony or a fuji. They have good light "character/magic" (traditional) lenses like the 35mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.8.

At least nikon's 28mm f1.8 is small and good. Too bad I need to buy an FTZ or ETZ adapter to use a regular ass 50mm.

I'm strongly of the opinion that phones all using 28mm equiv has by now forced enough people to look at enough wide-angle pictures to train most people's brains to edit the distortion out of the photos they view just like it does in real life

Wrong, if it each eye was a 21mm it would mean that both combined would make for a wider field of view, kinda like a 8mm, rather than a narrower one akin to a short telephoto that they really are.

Get the 28mm. The first crop mode gives you 35mm. With 24MP, there is nothing wrong to use crop mode.
