Because muh red ring. Seriously though, i have the 50mm 1.8 and wanted something a little more "special" if that's the right word. I will not be buying new, so the cost difference between the 1.4 and the 1.2 won't be huge. Also i will shooting wide open from time to time and the 1.4 seems even softer from most of the reviews i've seen, so the 1.2 make sense to me.

beware focus shift at close distances, 4 ft and below. i don't know if the R7 can focus stopped down to your taking aperture, that is what you want.

I've just had a look at this, interesting. So the converging light rays at f/1.2 are on a sifferent focal plane to the ones at lt's say f/4 due to element design, if i understnd correctly.

Surely refocusing or having servo enabled mans that once stopped down, the lens would refocus to optimal sharpness? or am i missing somthing?

I bought my 50mm f/1.4 for $99.
Tell me where I can get the 50mm f/1.2 for <$300?

Now i think i understand the focus shift issue. The camera focuses wide open, so will grab focus from the 1.2 focus plane, but once the shot is taken the blades move to the designated aperture and the focus plane shifts. To be honest i will reraly, if ever, be shooting at close distances, or beyond maybe f2.0 with this lens. and the R7 has a DoF preview button if i need be.

But this is not an issue i'd considered, or had heard about before so thanks for the insight.

In what universe does an EF 50mm f/1.2 not cost an arm and a leg, even used?

The EF version is soft. IMHO the gain in bokeh balls does not offset the IQ. I would grab the Tokina Opera 50mm f/1.4, it's actually better than the Sigma ART 50mm f/1.4. Unless of course you save up for the RF 50mm f/1.2, it's sharp as fuck and can do big bokeh balls.
