Probably too late for me to be making this thread but is it dumb to buy relatively expensive DSLR's instead of mirrorless?

Asking as I recently upgraded from a Canon 5d to a 6d mkii but realized after for a extra 150 euro I could have gotten a first gen Canon R

The cheaper first and second gen mirrorless cameras are pretty awful compared to high end DSRLs, especially canon because they actually had the same autofocus tech in live view so little changed except the scammy closed mount. EFRF adapter required.

I got Nikon D750 and A7 nearly five years ago. A7 of first generation is an awful thing. Believe me, it's an awful camera. Nikon D750 is light years ahead. But I was use A7 90% of time. Why? Compactness. Usability. On-sensor phase detect AF and so, therefore, phase detect AF while shooting in LiveView (from screen). Awful battery life, but who cares. A7 was just fun. D750 just wasn't. Also Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 is a masterpiece of a lens. A compact masterpiece.

Just enjoy your camera. The R has some advantages and some disadvantages vs. the 6D mark II. Any shot you can take on one can be taken on the other.

The EOS R is almost the exact same camera as the 5D Mark IV
You probably should've gone for the R if you're only taking photos, because despite its flaws (which are primarily in the video department) it's a terrific camera.
Just do a refund?

The R has better dynamic range at base ISO and slightly better high ISO. The 6D mark II has better AF tracking of fast action. (R has first version of DPAF which struggles a bit there.)
