just starting out and I am having a hard time understanding how to do framing that isn't so literal as pic. rel. Are there any guides or youtubes?

Unironically this.
I bought this book because of another /p/aggot’s recommendation and it’s the shit. It’s like a community college class on composition within a book, and has pictures that explain the theory being discussed in each section. The only downside is that the author is a traveling photographer so it’s a lot of landscapes and “slice of life” photography, not much for portrait/wedding specific stuff but all the content applies to all styles.

actually good advice. take your time and walk through your nearest big cities big art museum's classical department. see what they focus on, see what your eye is drawn too.

Honestly not just museum but real artists and even AI can be a source of ideas for photo composition

For example there's an artist I like, and they draw in rough strokes experimenting with visuals that rise up from the chaos. It has nothing to do with photography, but it's an influence. Do you follow any? If you see something that you like, do you ever feel inspired by it?

This is pretty bad. Dude regularly cramps up his framing and has no concept of breathing room.

A book that really helped me is Tavis Leaf Glover's Canon of Design. He actually takes composition principles from classical painting and applies them to photography.

Also the first rule is ditch the rule of thirds.
