Never done this before I probably won't again but right now I need you guys to either tell me I have potential or tear apart my ego
I just started trying to learn photography on my phone. I've just been focusing on things like composition, exposure triangle, etc.

A real snapshit is a photo without any thought put into it. Something catches your eye and you just shoot without much regard for any photographic element.

Also stop freaking about about whether or not you're good at photography or whether you have potential. You're taking photos it's one of the most pointless endeavors possible. It literally doesn't matter if your good at making things into pixels in a way that is subjectively considered good by people.

It's quite likely that no one will ever see or like you photos much even if you were really very good indeed. That said, it is always worth asking the question; Why would this image be of interest to another person?

A snapshit to photo is like doodle to drawing, definition is vague here. Imo important points of a snapshit are absence of message, natural light, and casual context. Imo, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad, but when snapshit is of something mundane and commonly seen, people tend to dislike seeing it.

These pictures, in a way, tell a story, there's this kitchen window with a houseplant, there's a house. When someone without your knowledge about these subjects looks at them, what do you think they see, what can they guess about people that live there?

that's a good approach. some others i like are: what do i want to show? and what do i want the viewer to feel? with those prompts, you aren't as limited by trying to adjust for a random stranger's perspective. you can shoot solely for your own taste, your own future experience when you look back on the picture later. you don't have to have concrete answers to these before you click the shutter, but keeping them in mind will help guide you. go from there

Art is subjective and snapshit often means dislike of a subject, especially in photography, where snapshit status is simply left behind by including some random city faggot in the frame then its OMG GREAT SO COMPELLING HUMAN CONDITION BLABLABLA. Or maybe someone is a light autist, and using a generic zero creativity lighting setup is enough for them, but what about a conscious decision to place someone by a window, or...

In the end, I don't think you should worry about what a snapshit is. You could be taking boring photos of vases and by the time you had enough of them not one single vase would be a snapshit because it would be an art project as a whole.

Just relax and keep shooting and keep posting, anon. Everyone's gotta start somewhere and that's what you're doing. Try walking around your neighborhood for a while during the "golden hours", sunrise and sunset (also a good excuse to sip some coffee). Also, as good as phone cameras are these days, it might not hurt to get a cheap basic digicam with physical controls to learn with. Doesn't have to be anything fancy. Pic rel is an old Powershot G12 I keep in my truck. It shoots RAW, can go full manual, and has good controls. I don't know what you're currently doing for processing but you can get free apps such as Darktable and start experimenting with that aspect too.
