What is the ratio of time you should spend on looking at or reading about gear, upcoming cameras/lenses, comparison charts etc... Vs taking photos with the gear you already have?

For me, I've probably spent about 200 hours taking photos, and 5000 hours reading about gear. Is this a good, bad or average ratio?

lets see, just on this camera, i got it in january, and my oldest image has a shutter count of 6468
the latest one i edited shows a shutter count of 12432
i have been abusing hi+ mode to take pictures of dogs running, and probably 100 blurry bird photos lately with a mirror lens that's manual focus only on this camera

but i haven't bought 6000 or $6000 of lenses, and i only read about gear when i get into an OCD funk where I have an overwhelming urge to find a way to make my shit cheaper without making it worse (never do this, you always make it worse)

you can minimize your time spent reading about gear by realizing the only review site worth reading is kenrockwell.com

You would be happier if you just bought nice things and enjoyed using them. Why don't you own a 70-200 F4 G II yet? Why don't you just buy the 20mm f1.8, the best sony wide for your money? Do you have an APS-C camera for backup and reach yet? The sony a6700 is the best in its class.

I think you might be right. If I had just bought everything I wanted from the get-go, I wouldn't have spent so much time thinking about what to buy next etc.

Just buy the most expensive full frame camera with the top 3-4 lenses and be done with it. You're probably gonna buy them later anyway. Might as well get it over with. It'll be cheaper in the long run.

The Sony A7RV is the best camera currently on the market for talented photographers to make the most of their stills skills, and the video is pretty good too. The only flaw is video suffers from rolling shutter because medium format levels of resolution and video still don't mix. $3898 is less than some people spend on weed. If they can afford it why can't you? It's only $108 a month for 3 years.

Then simply buy the entire G and GM lens catalog and by the end of the year you can narrow it down to the lenses you like the most.

I stopped looking at gear once I got my 5dc, there's just nothing I like more than that camera and it's kit lens. I never ever leave it at home, I bring it with me wherever I go.

I have been shopping gear for an upcoming Moab trip and have been upgrading stuff. I upgraded portrait lenses and a macro lens, and will probably pick up a 24-120/4 VR and sell a bunch of other lenses it will replace.

I will probably part with my 28/1.8 Sigma EX or the 24 1.8, the 24-120/3.5-5.6 Streetsweeper and some other Nikon AF stuff and pair it down to something I can fit in a backpack.

The 24-120 doesn't have VR, friend. Or is it an F mount lens? I'm picking up the Z version myself on Monday. Also buying like 5 other Nikon lenses, plus a second body. Nikon is running a sale in Europe right now, gotta take advantage of the opportunity.

If you have to buy on credit, I don't recommend it. But I'm a crypto millionaire who also run businesses etc. The time I invested into research could've been invested into the a7rv. Time is money.

But one thing I gotta say is... Its pretty fun to research and be a gearfag. Its more fun than photographing.

My brother was talking about buying a camera last summer. He has been researching cameras since then. Still haven't bought anything. He actually gave up recently and said he's not doing it anymore because it had taken over his life.

Gear should only be considered when whatever you have does not meet your needs. Buy the best you can reasonably afford to start out, take a bunch of photos, and if your gear doesn't do what you want to do with it, go find out what gear will allow you to do the thing. Buy it, then stop gearfagging and go take more photos.
