I bought a monitor with 99.6% aRGB support. Should I switch over to shooting and editing in aRGB? I know it's typically used for printing, but if I converted the output of the edited file back to sRGB before posting it online, would that have any negative consequences?

Tl;Dr: use SRGB for everything and only, very intentionally edit and print a single raw in aRGB on occasion, or your color fuckups will be dramatic and disappointing.

But how will I know when a photo will be a print? I can't retroactively change the color space of a raw file can I?

Save your favorite raws. They don’t have a color space. Those are for tiffs (another editing format for photoshop touchups, use 16 bit lossless) and jpegs.

Only re-edit in argb/cmyk whatever for a specific print job and make sure you proof and export in the correct color space at every step.

Oh okay. I didn't realize raws didn't have color space information. I just know the option is in my camera. Good to know, if that's the case I will just edit in aRGB as needed. Thanks. I would however still like a mid-tier printer/scanner though.

This thread is now about 10 and 12 bit monitors.
Have any of you used these new-ish high bit depth monitors when editing B&W photos?
My theory is that it should be much more helpful than "110% Adobe RGB" or "200% sRGB" etc. right?

You can get a 12-bit monitor? They must be very expensive. I've always used a 10-bit monitor, I refuse to editing on anything less. You're losing the ability to see a huge amount of data on 8-bit when editing.

I'm looking at LG 27UP85NP and LG 32UN650P on a local ecommerce site. Both cost around 400USD with VAT and shipping. And both are supposedly 30bit but only 95% sRGB.
Or the MSI MD271UL at 350USD with only 10Bit panel but 139% sRGB and 119% Adobe RGB.

Right now I edit on an 8bit IPS panel and while I have a calibration probe I believe that especially with B&W photography I'm missing out.

That's 10-bit. They are just using 10 x 3 for each channel (red blue and green) and you'll want at least 100% sRGB as that is the colorspace you'll likely be using if you post your photos online. So I'd avoid the LGs. Check reviews on the MSI, sometimes having a greater than 100% sRGB coverage can cause problems if it doesn't have a clamp or a dedicated sRGB mode.
