>>4211315Yep, I had the Sigma 18-35 before and liked the focus ring implementation the most among all lenses I've used. When autofocusing, the focus ring doesn't move despite being mechanically coupled, meaning that the motor fights less resistance and can be faster and more precise. The moment you turn the focus ring, it moves mechanically (even in AF mode), and there's a distance scale (though without aperture markings which I would have preferred). It's not one of those focus by wire implementations that pretend to be MF, it's actual mechanical focus. I believe most/all USM lenses will behave like that though don't quote me on that. The 18-35 is large, but I doubt that's because of the focus implementation so I'm fairly sure good engineering it can downsize in 2023.
Another way is Olympus' focus clutch, where you pull back the focus ring to engage a focus-by-wire + distance scale mode that allows repeatable focus pulls. Should definitely be possible to implement mechanically.
>>4211324I have been considering DSLRs, though a pure OVF doesn't exactly tick all my boxes. The hybrid OVF/EVF allows for OVF composition while simultaneously checking for exposure and SOOC settings. I'm spoiled by Olympus' excellent and customizable jpg engine so most of my output is submitted SOOC.
>pentaxI've not used their stuff before. Any brand-specific idiosyncracies to note?
