Changing shutter speed:
Faster = darker, freezes faster motion.
Slower = brighter, more tendency for motion blur. Really long exposures typically benefit from some noise reduction.
Changing aperture:
Larger (f/1.2 is bigger than f/4) = Brighter, smaller depth of field (things go out of focus faster), less diffraction effects, poorer lens performance.
Smaller = Darker, larger depth of field, more diffraction effects, better lens performance.
A lens sweet spot is when the lens performance gain vs diffraction effect of a smaller aperture no longer results in a net positive.
Changing iso:
Higher = brighter, grainier (mostly), less dynamic range (mostly), worse colors
Lower = vice versa
