I'm looking for a camera I can take with me absolutely anywhere, day or night,but especially rain or shine and having trouble finding good cameras and lenses. I want to be able to go out into the heavy rain and take photos and not be fearful, what camera and lens should I get? Apparently the only manufacturer that makes sturdy stuff is Pentax but I hear they're shit and dead

Afaik the OM-Ds are one of the dew cams which have an actual rating for weather resistance, so these might be good for you.

Most manufacturers dont provide this information nor do they peovide any warranty for water damage which tells you all you need to know.

If someone says "weather sealed" but not "water proof", it has "waterproofing" below the standard of a $10 casio watch. If it has at least an IP rating, you can be confident that it probably won't die, but in more extreme conditions there will be some ingress, which can cause immediate failure, or more likely, slow wear.

Brands that provide IP ratings, at least for high end equipment: Leica and Olympus.
Lenses you can expect the IP rating to preserved with: Primes.

Often operating a zoom will break any seals and allow water to enter. Don't go off youtube shit, pentax sales are nonexistent so any issues don't have the might and hysteria of statistics behind them to show up like they did with sony. If pentax sold as much as sony, each failure you found would be several hundred horror stories. If you cracked those cameras open post-test instead of merely turning them on, you'd find water and dust inside the camera. One of the few people to ever buy a K-1 found this out when very light ocean spray killed his camera.

sure, the camera might not die but condensation is at least going to build up and start a rust spot on a mechanical part or tin whiskers on the circuit boards...

then i saw a youtube video of someone walking around in dense fog shooting with his a7RIV with all of the ports open to conenct it to some recorder for vloggers or something. predictably, it died, because the body literally had a gaping hole in it. and he said "ree im done with sony" (most any camera would die from that shit).

people are absolute fucking retards about "weather sealing" and don't seem to understand why today's splash proof and mildly waterproof phones are glued together, not screwed, and totally devoid of buttons, scroll wheels, and ports.

realize that there are no camera brands that have enough confidence in their weather sealing to guarantee service in the event of water damage or include it in their warranty. that means that while some cameras might handle it a little better than others, ultimately, you're taking an electronic device out in the rain and water and electronics don't mix.

I've trusted my "weather sealed" d800 for a decade, and it hasn't shown any wear or damage from being banged about in the rain so far.

Leica and Olympus. Because these are the two only brands giving you real rating number in the form of IPxx rating. But. Ayh, of course, understand they are not in the same market stratum. As such, you must considering your budgeting. Pentax, my friend, is a bad joke.

Make sure you know what the IP rating says

IPX1 is trash, it's basically what pentax/fuji/sony have, "luck will save you". IP53+ generally means will not immediately die in the rain.
